The Original Bluesmobile Found! (sort of...)
Submitted 638 days ago by bbcentral
That's it, call off the search! One of the original Bluesmobiles from the original 1980 movie has finally been located! At least, that's what the owner would have you believe. Allow me to explain... A few months ago I was contacted by Lee Dawson, the founder of Elvis Express Radio, an online radio station dedicated to the music of Elvis Presley. He has been disputing the claims of a man named Bill Kinard that he owns an original tour bus owned and used by Elvis Presley. Bill owns the Presley Heights Museum in Tupelo, Mississippi. Lee has written several detailed articles demonstrating that the bus was never used by Elvis, he paid the down-payment but never bought it. It was later used by "J.D. Sumner and the Stamps". Bill also claims to own one of the original Bluesmobiles from "The Blues Brothers" movie. Lee was highly suspicious of this claim, so he contacted me for verification. As you can see in the photo, there is no way that this car is a 1974 Dodge Monaco. Our very own resident expert Leo examined the photographs and concluded that: "It appears to be a 1983 Plymouth Gran Fury. The original Bluesmobile is a 1974 Dodge Monaco. The '74 has round headlights and a full width grill. Your picture shows rectangular headlights". Bill has claimed that Lee's articles are "slanderous and full of lies". I'm no expert on Elvis buses, but his 3 pages of detailed evidence is fairly convincing to me. And the fact that the "original" Bluesmobile is so obviously a fake doesn't help Bill's reputation. Recently Bill sent an email to Lee claiming that a man named "Dan" examined the car: "A gentleman from California came to visit us this past Tuesday and looked at all the cars. Dan said, 'Yes, this car was definitely used in the original Blues Brothers movie'. Dan's company specializes in auctioning off 'movie cars and props' from movies. Dan not only looked at the movie cars but looked at all the items in the museum". To be blunt, Dan obviously has no idea what he's talking about. And now for the fun part. The "original Bluesmobile" has gone up for auction: Blues Brothers Police Car The auction has more photographs, including shots of the interior. Surprisingly, the car has a rollcage and Nitrous canister fitted, probably why Bill claims this was one of the stunt vehicles from the movie. But you can also see the dashboard looks nothing like a Dodge Monaco. In summary, this car is definitely not what the owner claims. It was definitely built AFTER the Blues Brothers movie was filmed in 1979. It may have actually been used in a movie or TV show, this type of car has been very popular in Hollywood over the years (a quick visit to the IMCDB listing will demonstrate that). But there is no way that movie was "The Blues Brothers".
