Paul Shaffer, musical director and comic on the Late Show with David Letterman for the past 25 years, was honoured with the order of Canada Friday December 12, 2008 investiture ceremony at Rideau Hall. Wearing shaded glasses and a discreet black suit, the Thunder Bay, Ont., native bowed to Gov. Gen. Michaelle Jean before and after she pinned the medal on his chest, but said he was at a loss for words during the encounter. "I was speechless. Her Excellency is so smooth. She said, ‘See what music, comedy can do?' And I said, ‘Hamenah, hamenah, hamenah.' That was my conversation with the Governor General," he said with a laugh. The Order of Canada, the country’s highest civilian honour, was created in 1967 during Canada’s centennial year to recognize a lifetime of outstanding achievement, dedication to community and service to the nation. Over the last 40 years, more than 5 000 people from all sectors of society have been invested into the Order. Original Source: GlobalTV |
