The Good Ole Boys "Winnebago" was not a Winnebago at all but rather a Dodge Southwind. Looking at pictures of the 1975 model -

Posted Image

And the 1979 model -

Posted Image

We know for sure it falls between the years 1976-1978. Determining the exact year might be as easy as looking at the wipers. I'll refer to the wiper arms/blades as flat or diagonal. On the Good Ole Boys RV, even though the passenger blade is slightly askew, the wipers are flat -

Posted Image

It appears 1976 Southwind's have diagonal wipers -

Posted Image
Posted Image
Posted Image

Once again there's a passenger blade askew on that last pic but I believe those particular wiper arms are designed to rest in the diagonal position.
---

The 1977 models have wipers that rest flat, similar to the Good Ole Boys -

Posted Image
Posted Image

Yet another passenger blade off kilter on that last pic but I believe that particular system is designed to rest flat. Here's another '77 clearly resting flat -

Posted Image

And then it seems like they went back to diagonal for the 1978 model year -

http://i141.photobucket.com/albums/r71/Steam_McQueen/P7/gob78-28.jpg

So that's why I think the Good Ole Boys RV is a 1977 model year. As for the length there were only 3 lengths for the Southwind in 1977 - 21', 25', and 28'. Without any doubt it's the 28' model.

As for modifications (aside from horns ) There are two small windows, one on each side, and the door window that were covered or filled then painted over.

http://i141.photobucket.com/albums/r71/Steam_McQueen/P7/gob77-28.jpg

http://i141.photobucket.com/albums/r71/Steam_McQueen/P7/gob004.jpg

The door window was probably an option but I think the two small windows would have been standard for the kitchenette on the passenger side and the bathroom on the driver side. The 28' 1977 Southwind had a shower in it, maybe it could be ordered bathroom window delete but every one I've seen pics of has both the small windows for bathroom and kitchen. Here's the luxurious stand-up shower of the '77 Southwind -

Anyone who wants to add any screen caps of the Good Ole Boys "Winnebago" or any additional info about the Southwind please do so. For now, here's a good deal on a 1977 Dodge Southwind 28' RV -

Has bedroom that fits King size mattress, couch that folds into a bed and also a bed that comes down over the driving area. Has kitchen with stove, oven, sink fridge and freezer. Has propane water heater and heating for the rv has a thermostat that also runs off of the propane. Has two roof top ac units that I believe need some freon, there is one window ac unit that works that I am including. RV has big block engine that runs good and has orginal miles of 55,600 miles. I am asking $1900.

1979 SOUTHWIND MOTORHOME 33FT 440 DODGE - eBay (item 170601465864 end time Feb-16-11 12:42:21 PST)

BiN was $4,000.00

* There are plenty of smaller (25ft or so) models for sale out there.

But, it is probably not worth posting those as most of the shorter models have the side door
too far forward, and if the door is farther back, they have tiny rear side windows.

It's listed as a 1978 but I think it's actually a 1979.

Steam, way to get going on figuring out another Blues Brothers vehicle!

Do I understand the tentative wiper theory (as outlined in pic 1)?

I see here:
PRICE DROP 76 Dodge Southwind 28' Motorhome
a 1976 shown in pic 2
PRICE DROP 76 Dodge Southwind 28' Motorhome - $2500 (Atlanta)
that looks like it has GOB "77" wipers.

I'm thinking wipers aren't enough to narrow down the model year.

IMCDB says the GOB vehicle is a 1976:
IMCDb.org: 1976 Dodge Southwind in "The Blues Brothers, 1980"
It would have been nice if they had posted the reasoning behind that assessment.

I didn't notice any differences between the fronts of the 76/77/78s (other than the wipers). Maybe there are differences on the side or rear that would help narrow it down.

your friend in theory discussions,
arthur

It is just a theory but I believe it to be sound. (so far)

When I was saving pics of Southwind's I can tell you that misrepresentation of year and length was very common. Even just above - a 1979 listed as a 1978. I also came across several 1977 30' models and 27' models but now know that in 1977, 28' was the longest model and there were no 27's. I'd say this Southwind you found is a 1977 and is about a perfect a match as one could hope for.

DODGE 440 Southwind Motorhome. Just needs carpet. Everything else operational and intact...must go. Cash and you drive home. $2,500.

Man, people providing descriptions that don't match the pictures really confounds the analysis!

I e-mailed the seller to see if I can get verification that it's a 77. If it's a 77, I vote we declare your theory a success.

Here are some pics of the GOB southwind that could be helpful for analysis.

That last pic was probably in a mockup and not the actual Southwind, but I love the look on McElroy's face.

I'm definitely curious to hear his response. My wiper theory may be hokum, I'm just not sure. I noticed this one on craigslist posted as a 1976 model ...

[IMG2]http://i1087.photobucket.com/albums/j461/SteamMcQueen/II/III/IV/VV/bb328.jpg[/IMG2]

I've sent that seller an e-mail asking if the year is absolutely correct. The theory of wipertivity hangs in the balance.

The Theory of Wipertivity has taken a hit. I asked the seller about this one ...

[IMG2]http://i1087.photobucket.com/albums/j461/SteamMcQueen/II/III/IV/VV/bb328.jpg[/IMG2]

And he replied that the title says it's a 1976. I suppose there's two ways the theory has a shred of hope here. #1- The title is wrong #2- At one point the diagonal wiper arms on this 1976 model were replaced with lay flat arms from a 1977.

I'll keep looking at '76-'78 Southwinds as they show up for sale. Lookin' at them damn wipers and what the heck maybe a member here will actually buy one of these lol.

I'll give your theory a shred of hope if you give me a shred of hope on my jump car 1974.5 prototype bumper. :)

Your theory is reasonable (that 77 had different wiper arms), but it does have some difficulties:
1) it would seem weird that they'd have a one-year-only middle-year different wiper arm. But not impossible - just a little weird
2) you have one seller that seems to have evidence to contradict the theory

but one thing that seems a problem is even if 77 originally had different wiper arms, it's not a guarantee that these 35 year old vehicles never had their wiper arms replaced. I suppose that it would be unlikely too, but we'd hate to base this evidence on something so easily replaced (even if unlikely to be replaced).

I think we may have a situation like the pinto wagon - these model years are so close to the same that we'll never be able to tell from poor quality pics of 35 year old vehicles owned by people that mislabel them.

But I commend you continuing forth!

I haven't heard back from the seller I wrote to. I'll write him again.

arthur

Hi kenbarls:
Welcome to the board! Do you have a Dodge Southwind? What year is it? Can you post some pics of it? You might be the only board member with a good starter vehicle for a Good Ole Boys replica. Or maybe it IS the good ole boys southwind! We believe all the Monacos were crushed, but who knows about the southwind.
thanks,
arthur

Hi Ken. I don't own 'em, I just post 'em. :)
---

I've noticed another Southwind posted as a 1978 and it has flat wiper arms so even if the theory of wipertivity is sound, I think it will be too difficult to prove not knowing for sure if the wiper arms have been swapped along the way. Maybe the buyer had the choice of which wiper arm configuration he wanted back in the '70's.? I guess for replica purposes any of the three years will work, '76-'78, and for added screen accuracy you'd want lay flat wiper arms. Finding or making the giant horns could be the fun part. http://www.bluesbrotherscentral.com/forum2/public/style_emoticons/default/icon_cool.gif

Must have been a solid ramp to launch that RV ...

They're replicas of brands. Ranchers branded their cattle to identify them as their property. In picture #2, there's a Rocking J. There's a Rocking R in picture #4.

Here's the Southwind I mentioned earlier, yet to be posted here, listed as a 1978 28' ...

Posted Image

78 southwind 28 foot

You can see there's an entire window missing compared to the Good Ole Boys. Plus this one has the bathroom at the very back so I really don't believe it's a 28 footer, I'd say it's a 25' model. So if the length is misrepresented then maybe the year is as well.? Gah lol ... I'm going to design my own cattle brand. Brand me a dogie ...
