A 1973 Mercury Montego up here in Ontario. Seller claims it's an authentic cop car but I'm not sure about that. Looks to be in great shape, though.

Posted Image

As far as I know the Montego was indeed a police car in the early 70's. I don't think this is one because the interior just doesn't look "cop." It has a 3 on the tree (in a cop car? really?) Only a 302 motor? Sure it's possible I guess, but the claim is that this was a Georgia State Trooper car. Who's he gonna catch with that heavy car and only a 302? Plus the speedo looks to be a non-certified 120mph.

Posted Image

I dunno. I can't seem to find a proper VIN decoder for this Merc but for the '73 Ford police car it would show a "C" in the 5th position for the 460 cop motor. And this Merc has an "F" for the aforementioned 302. So, I'm really thinking this ain't no cop car. Good parade car maybe. :o

Aw c'mon Steam, you of all people should know that the Montego in fact was used as a police in the early '70s: :BB:

IMCDb has it as a '71. :BB:

I'm pretty sure there was a 1973 Montego cop car but I think they're quite rare. I still don't believe the one for sale is an actual squad. And I'm right almost half the time, sooo ... :-P

It's a tiny pic, but maybe it is a 2-door.
pic 1 is of a 1965 Monaco from
1965 Dodge Monaco
which has a better angle on the door situation.

The 426 Wedge is interesting. I don't know much about it, but it looks rare enough that one might want the car for more than just parts.

A 1965 CHP Polara clone in Concord, CA.

The Polara is powered by a 383 Big Block V8 with a 2-barrel carburetor. It runs very well ...

The exterior is black. It still has the police CB antenna base on the trunk and the CB receiver on the dash. The wheels are steel with moon hubcaps.

There is nothing police about this car . It possibly been used by a police dept but it is not a police pkg . Most people try to sell there more doors as a X cop car . First thing thats obvious its a hard top and its a caprice .

They called it a sport sedan :BB:. There was no post sedan Caprice in '69 but I hear what youse guys are saying. Is there any reason why it couldn't have been special order? The ad mentions the larger brakes, sway bar and L48 350HP motor. I suppose any 1969 Chev cop car would have been the Biscayne? This one also seems to have a regular 120 speedo so I too highly doubt it's authenticity as a cop car.

I still like it. Good for bootlegging Dan's vodka into the province.

I'm sure the auction was open to anyone with the cash.

I also just read that the current owner only had it for about a month before placing back up for auction.

(I'm sure it wasn't to just "break even")

IS it still for sale some where?

Good one Steam. Sadly, we don't have Dan's vodka in my area. Skyy Vodka is really big around here. ;)

I can't see it for sale anywhere at the moment. As we know it's a clone and the asking price was $9,500. That is the car you were referring to?

There's also a 1968 Biscayne clone in Baltimore. Not for sale ... if it's the same owner he's had it for 15 years.

From the article:

..although it has a V-6 engine and standard transmission. Genuine city police cars had small V-8 engines and automatic transmissions.

I'm pretty sure that there was no such thing as a V6 engine in a Chevrolet in '68. They must be thinking of the straight-six.

But; that's typical of the Sun, so I guess I shouldn't be surprised.

...and don't get me started on the transmission bit.
