Jack Black States He Will Never Play John Belushi In A Biopic Of His Life

I’m not a big fan of biopics, as you rarely get to see a true reflection of the person whose life is playing out on screen. Instead you get to see a version of someone jointly created by the actor playing them, the director, and the writer, who with the help of family and friends tries to concoct a believable story while keeping those important cinematic elements of love and intrigue in there.
So I’m actually really pleased to hear that Jack Black has ended the speculation, which seems to have started purely because of a physical likeness, that he’ll play fellow funnyman John Belushi in a biopic of his life.
The star of Be Kind Rewind told Canadian newspaper The St Catherine’s Standard (reported here via Digital Spy):
“[Belushi’s] life is not as funny as his work, and watching me do an imitation of him doing his Saturday Night Live bits won’t be as funny as watching him do his SNL bits.”
“Just because the guy is an amazing and compelling artist doesn’t mean that telling his story is going to be interesting to watch.”
Black also cited Jim Carrey’s 1999 portrayal of Andy Kaufman in Man On The Moon as a bad example of the genre which proves his point.
Belushi died of a drugs overdose in 1982, at the tender age of 33. A biopic has long been rumoured, but never seems to get off the ground. Twenty five years after his death I’d hazard to say that maybe any idea of the film should just be shelved, and the man be left in peace.
Whatever happens, Jack Black will not be going anywhere near it.
