I was a DJ in college and had a Sunday night show that ran from midnight to 4 am for two years. Around two o' clock, I would start getting requests for "We're All Mad Here" and "Dead and Lovely."
He's one of those wonderful jewels I've carried with me from those years (along with Hank Williams, Nick Cave and Cat Power).
Any Tom Waits fans around here?

Oh that shift was GREAT. It started in the interview process -- they asked "would you work a 2am to 4am shift?" I wanted the job so I said yes. Later I found out I was the only one working that late! Two months in, the midnight to 2am DJ quit so they asked if I would just take over that slot, too.
I became great friends with the architecture students on campus -- because they were the only ones who were up that late (usuall working on projects) who would phone in requests. They were all eating cold pizza and wanted to hear Tom or Nick Cave or Eleni Mandell.

Yep! He also wrote "I Don't Wanna Grow Up" which has become best known for the Ramones version.

I like the song Burma Shave, as the signs themselves bring back good memories and the song itself seems an apt metaphor for the decay of society and how what was commonplace in the days of old fell to the side of the road and faded away into nothing; leaving those of us who are reminiscing to chase a fading dream of years gone by to a destination unknown, but somewhere ahead.

One of my favorite TW favorites is "Way Down in the Hole", which they used as the theme for the show "The Wire". They would change it up each season and use a different version. It was great.
