Hey Guys - the carb on my '74 440 Monaco is shot - rather than a rebuild, I am interested in something new, off the shelf that will bolt on - then I will be ready for Watkins Glen! :(

Fuel economy is not a huge issue, but I'd like something that delivers decent performance at approximately the factory 9 mpg city, 14 highway est fuel economy, at a reasonable price - thanks!

I've got Edelbrock 600 cfm 4bbls on all my hot rods, and I can't complain....they've always worked well for me, and are a breeze to work on or modify, if needed; they are based on the Carter designs.

Although I've got a rebuilt ThermoQuad on the shelf for my 440, I'm not holding my breath it will function flawlessly....my backup plan is an Edelbrock 750-800 cfm Performer series...
Edelbrock.com - Carburetors & Accessories - Performer Series Carburetors

"Reasonable" price is the kicker; these guys ain't cheap (when new)...I have 2 new ones and 2 rebuilt ones for my other cars, and the rebuilt one's work just as well, plus they are about 100 bucks cheaper. I got mine here:

They've got a facility here in Jacksonville where I bought mine, but they are nationwide.

thermoquads are pretty easy to rebuild and best of all they already have the mopar shifter linkage installed and ready to go. :D

the 600 cfm might be a bit too small on a 440.

I'm happy with 750 cfm on my 472 Cadillac. Works fine.

It's a 1407 with manual choke though.

Talked to a '72 Imperial driver on a meeting lately.
He uses a 650 on his 440 and says he'd like to switch to the 750 cfm.

BTW: All this said referres to Edelbrock.

I had my thermo quad rebuild and it still leaked and didn't work just quite right . The plastic body had hair line cracks . Bought a Edelbrock 750 and performer intake package from Mancini racing . www.manciniracing.com This was years ago but they probably still have it , came with the carb , Chrysler kick down linkage , aluminum intake and chrome breather . I had to buy a metering rod kit because it still needed more fuel , plus changed to a lighter spring in the 4 barrel to open sooner . But the performer RPM is a higher intake where the performer is a little taller than stock .

Because of the bridge being higher than the stock one, I had to switch to an open airfilter with a lowered base.
Does anyone of you know, if there is any fitting closed filterhousing around that has a lowered base so I can close the hood?

It's because I don't really like the open air filters...
That's because I don't want warm air in the intake from under the hood but fresh, cold air from the outside for a better combustion.
Open filters only make sense with a cutout in the hood and the filter itself sitting above it.

Just my two cents of course.

Yepp, thank you. :BB:

That might be IT.

What a nice idea to simply build a cover for an already existing top, base and open filter.

Thanks for the hint. :BB:

Originally ordered the Eddie 600 - but am taking back to the store to upgrade to a 750 - Since I am using the original intake, I'll still be able to utilize the existing dual snorkel air cleaner, right?? Thanks - Rob

You might need an adapterplate to fit the carb on the intake...
But using the original bridge the filter should fit on the carb and work fine so far...
