That was pretty cool.

The biggest stand-outs that I noticed:

First, how the city looked much dirtier back then.
It is so much cleaner today.
( I didn't know that the Merchandise Mart was ever that dirty)

* Yet the lake looked much more blue then it is today.
(perhaps it was just the coloring of the old film)

The second is how open the area was, around the old water tower.
When the image first flashed onto the screen, it took a second to realize what area they were filming.

It's always interesting to see how much has changed, and how much has remained,
over the last century.

Thanks ChiTown for posting that.

Very interesting vid, and in vibrant technicolor too! Chicago may have changed drastically since then, but it's nice knowing that most of these buildings and landmarks still exist. :BB:

I once saw an old home movie of my grandparents on a trip to downtown Chicago, around 1957. It was also shot in color, and I think my grandma had the reel transferred to DVD somehow. I'll have to upload it on YouTube when I get the chance.

Wow, that was awesome. ^_^

As someone who has never been to Chicago (let alone getting out of her home country!), it was pretty cool to see the landmarks of the city that I may one day get a chance to see for myself.

I more of an Old Style guy, which I can recognise that well, they dont compare.
But that is good stuff, didnt know it got around like that, just take for granted that I'm there.

I find when I want a few stronger beers before some style's I go for Heiniken in the can casue I'm a can guy, but more especially I like Bass. Really love that stuff.

I'd like to try a good old boston ale personaly, w/ the whole idea of the founding fathers, Ive finally warmed up to Samuel Adams beer.

I just had a couple of two herted ale's, like 9 bucks a 6'er! think it's U.P. or Michigan brew.

Here in the Copper Country we have the local Keweenaw Brewing co. Rreal good stuff, cool cans, but they fired a friend of mine as the Brew master, so I try not to but the stuff anymore. I post some pic's of the cans when I get a chance. Later!

Here is the Mart today:
Still partially stained, but not nearly as bad as shown in the old footage.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/80/2007-09-13_2400x1800_chicago_merchandise_mart.jpg

Through the years, much of the old buildings have undertaken large scale projects, to have teams come in and power-wash and acid away a century of grime.

* Btw... if the above photograph was taken during the filming of the BB's, the BluMo would be traveling, from right to left, as the police chased them across the bridge.

I only just started seeing the Goose Isle this month, they must've expanded their distribution. Enjoyed drinking them but probably won't buy 'em again, it was a little mild for me. Picked up 3 six-packs of different Sam Adams varieties today for the week ahead.

Hey ChiTown...as a Chicago beer connoisseur you must be missing Meister Brau (the inventor of lite beer)! 'Nothin beats a belly full of Brau'

How about the Falstaff six pack painted on grain silos that were just off the west end of the Skyway?

Hey TK,

the crews you mention to clean, well that at the time would have been Local 52 Tuckpointers, Caulkers and Cleaners. From which I'm a member, all the highrise and genrally downtown stuff is ours. We do all Masonry restoration on the buildings, caulking if need be and the cleaning.

That could be chemical and Powerwashing. Oxidation downtown can dirty buildings in a hurry, run a powerwasher across a city sidewalkand see what I mean! Ha!

Jim, I'm not much of a condasewer! Ha! I just pound! Brau wasnt bad, it's legacy a bit before my time as well as what ever the hell Falstaff is...? Huh?

Good for you Bis' if you can keep that 18'er for the week! Man.

Meister Brau was a Chicago brewery...and, coincidently produced a lite beer that became Miller Lite when Miller bought them. Never mind about Falstaff. It was an obscure, regional brand. But, as an ad in the 70's they painted some grain silos just off the Chicago Skyway to look like a six pack...this was very cool! These were near the 95th Street bridge...made famous in the BB film. Anyway...thanks again for the Chicago vid.

Ah very cool, the only big si pack I knew about was way up in LaCrosse Wisconsin, that was the original Old Style brewery, known as the largest 6 pack anywhere, but I'm thinking a couple of silo's off the skyway were probably bigger than that, thanks for the info!!
