Has anybody german ancestors?
File:Census-2000-Data-Top-US-Ancestries-by-County.svg - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

also! this here is really intersting:
Before World War I, more than 6% of American schoolchildren received their primary education only in German.[citation needed] Although more than 49 million Americans claim they have German ancestors, according to the 2005 American Community Survey, more than 96% of them speak English at home[1] and in total only 1.38 million Americans speak German.[2] Today, German is the second most spoken language in two states: North Dakota and South Dakota.[2]
In the United States, German is third in popularity after Spanish and French in terms of the number of colleges and universities offering instruction in the language.[3]

maybe you should read the wikipedia entry's :) about that!

The whole area of Texas that I'm now living in is made up of a large percentage of descendants of German immigrants, as well as a large Czech-derived population. My step-mom's bloodline is German. It's kind of a culture shock for someone like me (very English-blooded) who grew up super-white-bread-Anglo. I'd never seen so much beer and crappy BBQ'd sausage all in one place. (Go a couple counties over, though, and the BBQ gets better.) I worked on the yearbook staff in the school I went to in this area and had fun learning to spell all those German names.

There were a few places near here that were settled by Wendish people too. Wends are Slavs and other various peoples that lived in Germanic areas, way WAY back (say, 1300s or so.) Kind of an amalgamation of cultures there...
