I've noticed that while viewing online images in Firefox, that most of them were much darker, with higher contrast, than what they were supposed to be.

(Viewing offline, or with IE, images were fine)

Here's an example:
(Although mine was even worse)

I've just learned that this is a known bug in Firefox:
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=488800

"The system only supports ICC version 2 color profiles... and not Version 4".

(This started in Firefox3.5... but I still have it w/ the latest update)

You can read up on the subject, and test your browser, here:
Is your system ICC Version 4 ready?

(Compare the large image w/ the smaller images, to determine your results )

The fix:
- First type about:config, in your browsers address bar.
- Then go to " gfx.color_management.mode " and change the value
from 2... to 0.

- Restart Firefox.

Setting explanation:

Quote

0- Color management disabled.
1- Full color management.
2- Color management applied only to tagged images.
Full color management means that everything rendered by Firefox, with the exception of plugins, will have its colors "corrected".

This is where the problem lies. From what I understand, Firefox cant read some color profiles, and tries to correct them to it's own standards.

Worked like a charm... for me.
If your having the same trouble w/ Firefox, try the above solution.

I heard about this a while back.. something to do with Codecs & all that layer compression & file type stuff. Usually so long as you have a good image viewer installed (with loads of codecs) you should be OK.

There are some good freeware image viewers out there such as Irfanview & Faststone so try installing one of them & see if it corrects the problem.
