To be successful at all, the show is going to have to be as outrageous and adult today as the original was in 1980. Adult comedy, adult situations, adult language -- it has to dare to be rude and to break ground -- and contemporary, electric blues/soul. Belushi's widow may own some (all?) of the rights to the BBs, but it seems to me that for it to work on TV, Aykroyd should be involved in some creative capacity. It also should be broadcast on a cable network or on FX (like Nip/Tuck).
The first drawback I see is that the two actors have helped write the script. Does anyone really know who they are? Do they have writing ability? Anne Beatts is incredible -- but does she have a handle on who the Blues Brothers are?
The biggest drawback to me is how generic and non-informative the press release was. When will production begin? Who's the musical coordinator? Are Danny and Landis involved at all? Is a network interested? Is Universal involved? There really aren't a lot of answers, which leads me to suspect that, right now, Judy is just fishing for interest in a series that really doesn't exist except on paper. Probability that it will really happen? 20%.
But I want it to happen. I'll give it a shot. If it's rude enough, funny enough, and the music kills, people will watch.
