Because building movie props and costumes has been my only big hobby for over a decade, I've gotten pretty good at identifying and tracking down original items used to make movie props.

* I even have an example of this on this board.
(the vintage Trico wipers that Elwood snags from Lloyd's)

Now I believe that I'm onto something even bigger than the wipers.

But, I would first like to ask this question...

Does anyone have the full version of this photo (if there is one),
or know where it came from?

I don't know (my-oh-my-oh-my!), but I always thought it probably came from the photo shoots for the Briefcase album cover....

Sh*t !

I just typed up the whole presentation, but because it took so long to assemble,
the system already logged me out by the time I hit "Submit Reply".

Got an error... clicked "back"... and all of it was gone. :?

I'll try again later.

Edit:
I'll leave this behind though http://www.bluesbrotherscentral.com/forum2/public/style_emoticons/default/icon_cool.gif

I see you found out about Crest Lock, good job. Find the actual manufacturer of the briefcase yet?

I've got it down to three manufactures (all extinct) that made identical style cases.
(The leather parts only)

But, if this info was known already I only wish someone would have posted it in any of the other threads asking about his case.

...Would have saved (me) a couple weeks of raw research ;)

As far as I knew, based on the 2007 report by "Early American History Auctions, Inc." there were only 7 cases specifically produced for the movie.

The Billboard Magazine ads for the platinum (and double platinum) sales for
"Briefcase full of Blues" is what convinced me otherwise.

Anyway... it turns out that each component of the case (the leather, the frame and hinge, the handle, and the lock) were manufactured by different companies who held the patents to the individual components.

With the best news being that the manufacturer of the hardware,
(the lock, the hasp, and the handle) is in fact "Crest Hardware", founded in 1927 and
still in buisness today.
(Do a quick search for "Crest Hardware" and you'll find them)

But, if this is old info, I don't need to go into the details of the search.

I will though post some photos that were a big help in tracking down the case.

[ Technically it's not a "Briefcase". It was called a "Document Bag" or "Briefbag" and this particular style appears to have been produced from the 1940's until its phase out in the 1960's. ]

And finally the case that someone sniped away from me in the last seconds of a recent auction....

The winner of the auction probably doesn't even know what they have. ;)

* Also (from what I've been able to find out) "Crest" did not make the hardware for the BB2000 case, shown in the VIP lounge at Universal.
That art deco design was produced by another hardware company that unfortunatly does not appear to exist anymore.

The only thing I knew was about the hardware. Any other information you have is new. I picked up a similar (same construction, seams in the right place), but not identical case not to long ago. That's the first I've seen of one that actually is the same, except for the color of course. Don't feel like you are rehashing any info, you aren't

The company names to look for are:

- Mutual Briefcase Co., Inc
- Wear Best Leather Specialty CO.

(The patent holder and manufacturer of the "Stay-Open Frame",
was a company named "Cesso")

I've written to, and heard back from, a lot of owners of the correct style case and
the majority answered that their case was made by one of the above two companies.

* I've also found one example made by a company called "Maximillion" out of New York
and one example from a company called "Carlton".
But, those were the only two examples that did not come from one of the above manufacturers.

Although the names really don't matter too much as most of the companies no longer exist,
and those that do have moved on to producing modern style cases. (ie: nylon and plastic)

So, even armed with the company names, searching by that route is actually the harder way of finding a case.

The easier way would be to keep an eye on eBay and look for a case that has the correct stitching.
(double line across the top and straight lines across the bottom and sides)

* pay attention to the bottom of the bag as well, because some will have an accented or rounded stitch pattern, in the corners.

It won't matter what company it comes from as they will all be the same.

The lock(s):

If any of the briefcases I found had one of these two locks, the owners
answer was "Crest Lock", ... 100% of the time.

(I show the first one because the cases you find will likely have this style)

Posted Image

Posted Image

In most instances the correct stitched case will come with the proper handle.
* Look for a handle where the connection hardware consists of two round posts...
(some will have flats, or squared bars).

If not, "Crest Lock" also sells the proper style handles, so no worries there.

- Crest Lock sells the handles and the lock for about 12us each.
* You'll also want to purchase the correct style hasp, for the closing strap.

... Add 20 dollars or so, for the vintage bag, and you'll have yourself a screen accurate
briefcase!

BB2000:

Other than the case on display at Universal, I have found only 3 other examples of the correct style lock/hasp.

- One was stamped - "Stronghold"
- The second was stamped - "Stronghold 757"

And just today... I found a third one that is stamped.... "Crest Lock" http://www.bluesbrotherscentral.com/forum2/public/style_emoticons/default/icon_cool.gif

(Although this style does not currently appear on the website)
http://www.cresthardware.com/locks.htm#3slotlck

* The lock on the briefcase, in the Universal display, does have a name stamped into it but I can't quite make it out, with the photos I've seen.

The case itself I have not found yet.
Although, it appears identical to the above cases, with additional quarter round patches added to the lower corners.

I'm still waiting on a few final answers, from vintage case owners, about the manufacturers of their specific bags and hardware, but I expect the new info will fall right in line with the current info.

Lastly... The biggest obstacle in the whole process will be turning the bag black.
I have found not one example of the correct bag, in a black color.

They have all been brown.

I hope this info helps everyone to assemble a 100% accurate bag/ briefcase. :|

Good luck and please post your results!

That's great information, excellent work.
Here's the briefcase I found

Posted Image

I've cleaned it up a bit since I took this picture. No manufacture information on it anywhere, just Crest Hardware. Hardware is close. Strap is slightly too narrow and of course it has corner patches. Guess that makes it a Hybrid of both movie cases. At least it's the right color. Funny part of this story is I had been looking for one of these, and eventually gave up. A few months later I found this at a Antique and collectibles show. At the time, I bought it without realizing how close it was, as I didn't have reference material with me. Got quite a pleasant surprise when I got home and checked.

That's just a little small. Mine is 13x18 inches. (33x46 cm).

Nice case Lightning.. and it's in black.

Other than yours, I still have not seen a proper style black case, outside of the film.
Even finding a photo of one is proving to be difficult.

I did hear back from 3 more owners of the correct style case.
(the bag itself, not the lock) and all were brown "Mutual" brand cases, with the more common
style Crest lock.

Here's a new question...
Does your case have the two hardware pieces (one on each side), under the closing flap?
Many that I have seen do not have those two little pieces, but at the same time, most showed signs (imprints and old tack holes) as if they were there.
I'm thinking these were probably the first things to loosen and fall off of the case.

It's got a keeper piece on the Handle side to catch the other side of the frame when closed, but no piece on the other side or evidence of there being one.

Have you seen the patent?

I did.
Thanks for that.

In fact, that info lead to finding the patents on nearly every component of the case.
So far I have found patents for the:

- Handle
- The round posts that hold the handle to the case
- Each side of the closure (located under the strap)
- The "stay open" frame
- The spring hinge that holds the frame open/ closed
- The feet/protectors
- The cressent shaped push button itself (without the rest of the lock)

That's a great shot.

I found the same one a while back, but it was very dark and very small.
So, thanks for posting it. A great reference.
