Whenever a new member joins this site, they get sent a private message welcoming them.

But for some reason, dozens of these new members reply to the private message, they quote the entire thing but don't write anything in response!

Here's an example:

I thought perhaps it was only spammers doing this, but some of these people have gone on to write real posts on the forum.

Does a blank reply mean anything? Is this some kind of internet tradition I've never seen before? The only thing that I'd compare it to is replying to unsubscribe from a newsletter, but that can't be it. Or is it just that some of the new members are having trouble figuring out the private messaging system?

I should add that there are plenty of new members who post real replies, usually to say hello and thank us for the warm welcome :)

This has happened to me at various times as well. I figured either they screwed up or simply re-sent/replied my email as an acknowledgment that they had received it...

But yeah, a real head scratcher.

Maybe it's just a lazy way of saying "thanks, got your message" :BB:

Ah well, no big deal :)
