Your filesystem might be corrupt somehow.
That is not nice. You shouldn't do a defragmentation before chkdsk is completely content.

Try again, until you suceed...

Maybe someone here on the board knows a trick on that problem.

OK if you are running Windows XP or earlier, download a (free) program called "Defraggler" with this you can defrag your drive, plus it has a built in scandisk/chkdsk type program you can select. Vista tends to have it's own automated defrag system
Defraggler - File and Disk Defragmentation - Free Download

Also from the same site, download the program called CCleaner - it may be a severe excess of clutter on your drive is preventing the drive from doing what it should to repair it.. sometimes you will find drives with less than 15% of free space will simply refuse to defrag using the windows defrag tool (hence a good reason to use a 3rd party application) & ChkDsk may refuse to work as well as a result.
CCleaner - Optimization and Cleaning - Free Download

give it a go & see how you get on.

Back up your important data now! If your file system is corrupt all kinds of secondary problems could start happening - especially with a heavily fragmented drive.

At a DOS promt type C:\chkdsk /f /r
But you can't do that while the OS is up & running-
It will then ask you if you want to run this at the next reboot tell it Y (yes)
Reboot and let it do it's thing
This will correct file associations, indexes, security, etc.
