Just out of curiousity. ^_^ (And also 'cause it'd be nifty to be able to talk to other Linuxites out there ;)) If so, what's your favourite flavour?

My Linux of choice is Ubuntu -- I'm on 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex), and I use it because I find it fairly user friendly and comfortable to work with. I've been using Linux on and off for a while now, but I recently ended up installing it as my main OS after a major computer catastrophe left me unable to use Windows. While I do miss some of my Windows software, I can still run most stuff through Wine, though a small proportion of programs refuse to run. : )

So: if you are running Linux, which flavour are ya using and why?

Linux/Ubuntu.

I'm not sure which version.....

Windows sucks.
I got everything I need....almost...

i used to use Ubuntu 8 on my Laptop.... reverted back to Windows when i discovered i couldn't install most of the software i had or wanted to use on there such as Google earth & Netobjects fusion.

Personally speaking if you just want a PC to go web hopping on (if you are one of these who spends all your time on Facebook) or for your kids to go web hopping in relative safety on that old PC you stuck up the loft a few years ago, Ubuntu is the bee's knees, & no problems with virus or spyware as ubuntu is immune to windows problems, so kids can open up all the email attachments or download all the games they want without screwing up your operating system every 5 minutes.

Not Linux, but I do run Ubuntu 9.04 on VMWare. The only drawback for me is connecting to a Windows doman. The packages needed and the install to authenticate is a PITA! Other than that It's smooth running and low resource usage.

downloaded a copy today, but i'm sure it wasn'y 9.10 :BB:

Planned on sticking Ubuntu on an old Acer laptop i've recovered with a small HDD fitted. Hoping that won't get filled up to the max in the 1st 6 weeks with windows updates & hotfixes as well as anti-virus & spyware software so opted to try Ubuntu to keep things trimmed, but for some reason the laptop doesn't seem to like it. Tried to install 9 & the pc hung at the "install" page & when i tried the older version it got a bit further but stopped when the 1st window appears & tries to load. Looks like i'll have to stick with XP home & just put up with it nagging me every 5 minutes to turn the updates on.

Got and installed 9.10 tonight. : )

I'm not so sure of this new software centre thing they've put in place of the add/remove software tool used on 8.10. The startup is shiney, though. Kinda neat. :3

EDIT: Also -- what happened to the Flying Toasters?! *misses the Flying Toasters! xD Goes searching for 'em in the Synaptic Package Manager...*

I know I'm late, but....my PC defaults to Ubuntu (you actually have to TELL it to boot into Windows if you want Windows), and I run Ubuntu via virtualization on my MacBook when the need occurs.

Dauber -- yeah, I run Windows XP via Virtual Box when the need arises. Nifty thing, that.

Been trying for the last couple of weeks to try and get XP to run from a USB thumbdrive. Thus far, no luck, but keeping trying.

I also had my first ever kernel panic the other night, on Ubuntu. Sca-ry!

I have played with all different linux's in my via virtual machine think Ubunta was one i struggled with, has anyone tried Red Hat Linux or Suse? Another good one is Puppy linux, suggested by a guy I work with boots of CD.

P.S am new to site so am getting my bearings. :)

I went to download Suse and gave up 'cause it was taking forever. xD

I've tried installing Fedora before, certainly, but I found the procedure somewhat unfriendly. Ubuntu was, for me at least, far more user-friendly.

And I've heard of Puppy Linux *nods*. Some good things have been said about it.

Yes, Shane, they do normally boot from CD/DVD -- I generally download the .iso, and burn to disk on my own. This said, you can also make bootable USBs, nowadays, with UNetbootin. ;)

Ubuntu's not much different from a lot of other Linuxes. It's built off the Debian version, so a few file format differences in installers for some programs (Red Hat/Fedora tends to use .rpm, whereas Debian tends to favour .deb -- that is, if you even get these! Some people will just give you the source code and tell you to compile it yourself!). The default desktop is usually Gnome, which vaguely resembles the Mac and old Atari desktops (unless you're using Kubuntu, in which case, you'll end up with something that looks closer to Windows). Default colour scheme is oranges and browns. The word "Ubuntu", itself, means "humanity to others" -- a value the community tries to encourage. :P

As noted, Ubuntu is well known for being one of the most user friendly Linux distros, with a number of new users getting their first taste through using Ubuntu.

Am not suprised Gnome is used, thats used for most of most linuxs like Ferdora / Suse

Ubutu sounds good is it worth downlaoding from site doing .iso image?
