The rust colored spot is red primer.
It is only on one side.

As I understand it, the phone number is/was 235-4121. The first number in my picture is wrong, but I have since changed it. I used 6 inch tall cardboard stencil lettering that can be found at any hardware department such as in your local Wal-Mart. This same stencil also works perfectly for the word POLICE and the unit number across the trunk. The unit number is still a matter of some debate. I watched the scene of the Blumo falling apart one frame at a time and believe that I saw 172 as the number (there is only one frame that shows a good view of that side of the deck lid), but it is more widely believed to be either 176 or 178. I'm gonna try watching it on a high definition television soon and see if I can make it out. I used 172 on my car, but eventually changed that to 176. I then weathered the last number enough that you can't tell what it is.

Hey 76,

I noticed your rear bumper does not have the bumperettes. Was your bumper changed at one time? The only ones on 75-77's I have seen without them have been police pkg cars. I have a 76 A38 Monaco and she came with the same bumper as yours. The reason I ask is the dealer order books I have from those years show the bumperettes as standard on 75-77. But maybe they were just standard on the front and not the rear. Maybe I will have to read it again.

But also as anyone that knows about Chrysler products in the 70's there were lot's of inconsistencies once the cars hit the production line.

Just find it interesting that yours is that way. I know it's not ground breaking information that will make us all rich! But I like to catch little Chrysler 70's ticks as I call them, just for fun.

Take care buddy,

Huey

I know I am in the minority here, and possibly on my own on this site, but the paint spots on the hood and the fenders "in some shots you can see splotches on Jake's side on top of the fender" have always appeared gold in color to me. Clearly at the Torintino scene the paint looks to be gold to me.

I have always used gold for this instead of red primer. I know the primer makes more since, but it just doesn't look like red primer. I have been painting cars since I was 16 which is 26 years and I have used red primer many times so I know the color pretty well. I know I am not color blind, so does anyone else on here see it as gold? I am not the only one that thinks this, I have other BM buddies that think so and those that don't. So it's always fun discussing it with your BB buddies.

Later,

Huey

Great pics Ghost. Love the car Huey.

I think it can be hard to say for certain exactly which color is correct - it could very well be gold or it could be red that faded to a lighter color (sunlight & dirt can fade paint pretty easily). Without seeing an original, I guess either could be correct. I did drop in a couple more pics that might help.

Here's one for Huey - note the red corner on the peak of the front passenger fender in the bottom pic has the same primer paint on it. Ah, it's the little things isn't it? I keep that pic as a background on my laptop - looks good. Keeps reminding me of what I will own someday - great shot of Dan and Jim too. Also Huey, I bought this ride from the original owner & neither the front nor the back had the bumperettes. I always wondered that myself. I agree though - Ma Mopar did some crazy things from what I have read. I'll have to someday drop pics of the paperwork I found in the car - everything you can imagine was included - even the dealer's stock number that hung in the window, 2 build sheets (yep -2), the bill of sale (she paid $5,500), warranty cards, undercoating receipt (I hate that stuff) original manuals - you name it, it was there. Enjoy the pics guys - I'm almost leaning towards some gold, but knowing me, I'd throw in a hint of the red for effect to help weather it. By the way, I doubt it helps any, but the VIN on my car reads: DM41K6D214417. I decoded it a while back but can't remember what it all meant.

Funny thing is, I've been looking at pics of your Bluesmobiles for awhile, Huey, I've never noticed that you used gold for the primer spot. It's only now that you mentioned it, that I've noticed. Was there such a thing as gold primer?

I'm thinking the red might look a wee bit better. I guess it depends on the light. I know there's been questions about the paint on the General's. Hemi Orange or Corvette Red. They used both and it all depends on the light I think.
