Hello everyone. I am brining this up because I have seen the police package designation for Monacos be used as both "K" and "A38." It took me a long time to figure this out. I always thought "A38" was the police package and meant the car was a police car. That is only half right.

I found this out after finally getting a real ex-police Monaco with a "K" in the vin. To my surprise, there was no "A38" anywhere. The car is the real deal though. Dual exhaust, 440, special seats, special seat belts, huge brake booster, 14o certified speedo, and the list continues.

So I had a police car with the police package, so where was my "A38" code? I found my answer in the 1974 Dodge Pursuit vehicle brochure. The brochure detailed all the specifics of the police package and said it was available on any Monaco by ordering the A38 package.

It turns out the the "A38" package IS indeed the police package, but that does NOT make it a police car. "A38" was the designation used for a civilian Monaco built with the police package. I have only seen ONE of these cars in my life. It did NOT have a "K" in the vin, but sure enough, it had all the police upgrades. I'm sure only a handful of these cars were made.

The "K" in the vin DOES make it a police car. This explains why some Monacos have a "K" in the vin, but do not have the 440. That little "K" in the vin is what makes a Monaco an official police car because it shows it was built and sold to a law enforcement agency. So.... police cars have the A38 package, but it is not mentioned, it is already part of the "K" code.

These details are not specifically laid out in the brochure as I have done here, which is why it took my a while to figure it out.

~Share the knowledge my Dodge brethren.
Oh, this can is from a surplus disposal run. 15 overcharged ounces of pure uncompounded isoproponyl butane monosulphide.

Thanks for info, guys...;)...alas, mine is a "K", but with no factory 440 in '75....hopefully, in '09, it will be a 440 "non-factory package"...:BB:
