jake did not drive as far as any one knows of and it would have been VERY ILLEGAL for him to do so .
And since when has illegalities stopped them from doing anything?

I never thought about the whole thing that Jake couldn't have died in jail since Elwood is outside waiting on him.
Still, even so, if he DID die in jail and Elwood never knew he died (whether in the same penetentiary, or if Jake was moved to another one), Elwood would be waiting outside with the expectation that Jake would be out also.
That's why Warden Oz walks downstairs to tell Elwood what happened--he never knew.
Did Frank Oz's character even have a name in either film?
Anyways, the story could work either way. I think that the makers of the film left that decision up to the audience member to determine what they thought happened to Jake on purpose.
I started a "How did you end the movie?" thread for BB2K; oughta do the same thing, but "How did you begin the movie?" I like reading the responses!

BB: Private says that it's Veto Zannzo. (Then again, it's in cursive and I suck at cursive ... so I could be wrong.)Did Frank Oz's character even have a name in either film?

Veto Zannzo? Sounds like a demi-god worshipped around 1200 BC by the Hittites, minion of Gozer...
heh heh...

I'm sure I read in BB Private that Jake once stole a car to visit Elwood when they were separated at the orphanage. There is no record of Jake's license in the book, but he could have applied for one after his release from prison.
I don't think Jake could have died in 1982. I'm sure it would have been closer to 1998. How could Elwood not find out about it for 16 years?
(And 'Best of the Blues Brothers' is not official, ignore that DVD completely! Unless you think Elwood was released in 1992, recorded the interview knowing Jake was dead, re-offended and went back to prison, released in 1998 and somehow forgot Jake was dead...)
Here is my 'timeline' of how things might have happened:
(this is NOT official, please don't re-post this anywhere!)
1980 - Jake, Elwood and BB Band put into prison
1983 - All of BB Band is now released (different prison lengths)
1985 - Jake released
1986 - Elwood stays in touch with Jake, is transferred to lower security prison
1997 - Elwood is 3 months away from release, Jake agrees to pick him up that day
1997 - Jake passes away
1998 - Elwood is released, waits for Jake. Jake doesn't show...
How could Jake have died? I doubt it would be drugs. According to Blues Brothers Private only the band were doing cannabis (why do you think Duck Dunn had so many pipes?
I'm thinking a heart attack from all the fried chicken and beer.

But this thought just occured to me. It's highly far-fetched, but nothing is absolutely impossible. Since we never see Jake's body, can we be ABSOLUTELY sure he is in fact deceased? It's remotely conceivable that for whatever reason (perhaps the government hired him from some top secret suicide missions where they use ex-convicts they don't expect to come back, and they needed a good cover), Jake could have faked his death, however it did come out, to make the world THINK he's dead. If they do go for a third film, perhaps they'd like to consider this possibility: drop hints he might still be out there in this realm of existence, build it up slowly throughout the picture, and then at the end, if they can find the perfect actor, reveal Jake alive and well and ready to go back on the road with his brother.

Yeah, I always figured Elwood seemed a little contrived on that DVD, as if Dan Aykroyd was performing him in a split-screen type performance...
Of course, Elwood MIGHT have been allowed out under tight security for the concerts he was performing all those years, and for that DVD...still, if he knew on the DVD Jake was dead, like you said, how could he be so surprised in BB2K?
Well, what IF (?!) the Best of the Blues Brothers was actually meant to take place AFTER BB2K?? Huh? HUH?!
The chicken/beer heart attack--yeah, I can see it. I definitely can. Of course, it could have been the 1920's blues-singer-scenario: Jealous husband of a loose wife (unbeknownst to Jake) poisons the performer (ie, Robert Johnson's death). Possibility?
Hey, when we find a good plot line here that we all agree on, someone with great writing skills needs to do the fan fic about this.

"Not official?" Let's see...Best Of The Blues Brothers was co-written by Dan, stars Dan as himself and "Elwood" and was released by Broadway Video, which is owned by Lorne Michaels. Yeah, you're right...definitely not "official."
Best Of The Blues Brothers was about the real-life circumstances that led to Danny and John putting together this band. The Blues Brothers movies are fictionalized accounts of the band's exploits and adventures.
The two co-exist separately and are meant to be enjoyed as such.

What I meant was that anything that happened in Best of the Blues Brothers was overwritten by Blues Brothers 2000. It's a great DVD, but as it was a documentary rather than a movie, it's almost impossible to consider it 'fact' in the Blues Brothers 'universe'.
If you want to consider it to be part of the Blues Brothers story, then you are free to do so, but as I said it makes things very difficult. When I wrote Elwood's biography for the website, I ignored anything from Best of the Blues Brothers, or else it would have taken me weeks to work everything out.
Here are some of the things that Best of the Blues Brothers refers to:
[list]
[*] Elwood is good friends with Dan Aykroyd
[*] Elwood knew Jake was dead in 1992 when he was released and interviewed, but re-offended and somehow forgot about Jake's death when he was released in 1998.
I'm sorry if my use of the word 'official' confused you. I probably should have used the word 'canon'. This is a documentary, not part of the Blues Brothers story.

I agree. What I meant to say was that the documentary and the movies are two different things. One (the documentary) was about the real life story of how the band got put together and the other (the movies) is the fictionalized account of how it happened.
They are not meant to co-exist as part of the same chronology. I enjoy them both for what they are - though I try to forget Blues Brothers 2000. For me, the story ends with the original movie. But, to each his/her own, I say.
