I'm looking for ideas to make a BLUES BROTHERS costume theme party better. We got the movies on a big screen, we got the sound tracks but welcome your thoughts!

I think I already messaged these ideas to you, but just for fun I'll mention them again (and also for anyone else who needs it in future!)

Firstly, if you can find cheap hats/sunglasses/ties to hand out to your guests that can help (then they only need to wear the white shirt, black pants etc). I know a lot of people order bulk lots of BB costume items from Amazon around Halloween :)

As far as music, it's easy to just play the movie soundtrack, but to mix it up a bit you can include:
  • Other BB albums
  • Music by other cast members of the movie (ie James Brown, Aretha, etc)
  • Original versions of songs covered by the Blues Brothers
  • Other songs that appeared in the film but not the soundtrack

Maybe serve some fried chicken? (Or buy a big pack of those buffalo wings from the supermarket, we do them all the time, they're nice and easy!).

How about some dry white toast, sliced into small pieces to go with the dips? Instead of using crackers

If you're any good with graphics on your computer, put together some mock-posters to decorate your walls. Maybe something similar to the Palace Hotel Ballroom poster, even if it's a black and white version. This is how Universal Studios does it:

You could also do this for your invitations, if you're using them.

To create atmosphere, you could pick up some of those cheap party lights in the style of police car lights:

Although I think the batteries drain pretty fast on those.

That's all I can think of for now, anyone else have any ideas? :D

Well there are the dark glasses, black suit and tie with white shirt, women can dress with long hair and big nails like jake's ex fiance' at "curl up and Die", there is the gold outfit twiggy wore, the long hair the saxaphone player had...maybe just try things like that. Serve dry white toast, whole fried chickens and a coke and a glass of water(yarrr) Unroll Parchment. Also have some people dressed as police men and swat. Or even "The Good Ole' Boys Band". Have a banner that says "Bob's Country Bunker" and also serve pepper steak and play both kinds of music" Country and Western".. Hopefull this can help. Have fun.

Have 3 colors for table cloth if you're going for that: blue, black, white. Play BB music (albums that they did and the original songs if you can find them, try youtubing), have black shades as party favors, have chicken, toast, and other mentioned/eaten foods in the movies, um....wear the actual costume or have like...Jake and Elwood drawn big on paper so they look human, and...that's all I can think of.

Have a dance off! While some of the songs play, i suggest before dinner, have a contest to see who dances the best. Do teams with a "Jake" and "Elwood" on each team. Give the winning team a pair of glasses or a hat or something. Maybe a ruler ;)

"Orange Whip" has also been used as brand name for non-alcoholic drinks. In the 1950s, the Tropical Fruit Company marketed an "Orange Whip" concentrate to be served as a fountain beverage. Jeanne Carmen, an actress and pinup model from that period, was once dubbed "Miss Orange Whip". The US Patent and Trademark Office lists various applications for the "Orange Whip" trademark to be applied to drinks and a chain of juice stores.

It was this type of Orange Whips they talked about in The Blues Brothers.

Quote

The drink had a resurgence in the early 1980s after the release of The Blues Brothers. In that movie, John Candy's police detective attends the film's pivotal fund-raising concert in order to arrest the performing band, but decides he wants to see them perform first and orders drinks for himself and the uniformed state troopers he is with, saying: "Who wants an orange whip? Orange whip? Orange whip? Three orange whips!"

The drink was not in the original script. The costumer, Sue Dugan, on the film is the daughter of the late Kenny Dugan, Vice President Orange Whip Corporation, and he had been providing refreshments for the cast. Mr. Dugan asked if "Orange Whip" (the non-alcholic beverage product) could be mentioned in the film. John Landis, the director, mentioned this to Candy, who improvised the exchange

Ah ok, I always wondered why the cops were drinking on duety, though it did seem funny. Thanks Soul Man.

The party's probably been and gone, but here's an idea for anyone holding something similar in future...

3lwood talked about a dance off - well how about one further, play 'Shake a Tailfeather' and see how many of the dances people know. Or get a good dancer to demonstrate all the steps and see how many people can remember.

You should get most of them of the steps from watching the movie, I'm sure Youtube can fill in any blanks!

Thanks to all...Great ideas! The party is on 18 July and most ideas are IN. Trivia Q: In BOTH movies, what got broke during a chase in a pursuit vehicle. Clue: The same line spoken refers to this by different players in BOTH movies?

The party is Saturday. Nearly everyone invited is coming (except Russell Crowe)...great turn out expected. We've got the Soul Food Cafe, Bob's Bunker and Kitchen, Ed's and...of course, Ray's. Music from the movies, classic funky blues, 'Best Dressed' prizes and a Trivia Game that should challenge even the most serious BB fan. Hopefully, the Rollers don't show!
