Is there any type of etiquette concerning PMs that I'm not aware of?

The reason I ask is this:I have a pet-peeve about them,I HATE it when they're not returned in a timely fashion. If I send someone a PM,and it's not replied to within a certain time,I start to get annoyed. If the person I sent the message to remains online the whole time,I get really annoyed.

My annoyance is in direct proportion to the content/seriousness of the PM.

Am I being out of line on this?Is there a code of ethics I don't know about?

In general, people should return PMs or e-mails, if nothing else but to acknowledge receipt. If they can't answer them, at least they should say "Sorry, but I don't know what to say."

The problem is that sometimes e-mails/pms don't get through, or that pop-up notification doesn't come up. Or maybe they appear to be signed on, but they aren't (I can't tell you how many times I have come to the home page to find myself already "on" - when I haven't been for a really long time).

Then there are the times when I am logged in, but really am not available to chat or write notes online (ie., at work).

If you sent someone a PM/e-mail and didn't hear back in a reasonable amount of time (2 days?) then resend with a note asking if they got it.

Jo_ hit the nail on the head! I sometimes get a pop up notifier and sometimes I don't. I'll just happen to glance up and see a message waiting and it may have been there 3 days!

Then I feel awful...

I sometimes only have time to login to the forum and have a quick read through the latest posts, do a quick bit of moderation/administration/maintenance then log out again without replying to anything. It doesn't bug me when people take a while to reply, but then I rarely message people on here, usually it's people messaging me.

I always get a popup notifier, but sometimes I have PM's I don't have time to reply to so I mark them as unread again (and that way I remember to come back to them). Usually they involve some kind of research, I've sometimes spent 20 minutes writing a reply to a PM because it was too complicated.

You can always check the box for a read reciept. That way you'll get a PM letting you know that your message has been read, and that way you can at least know it was acknowledged. That said, nobody is obligated to reply to PMs. I only generally reply when I have something to reply with. Like faving without commenting (on DA, FF.net, etc.), it's not a big evil to remain silent.

Although I think what would be really rude is to have an auto reply that says something like, "I'm too busy and important to reply to your meaningless drivel. F*CK OFF."
