Hello fellow Bluesmen/Blueswomen,
Again I apologize for not checking in more often. Things are hectic in the world of music and it's hard to find the time to fit in everything one wants to do. First, here is a brief update on band related items. We were honored to be a part of the 2009 Obama Presidential Inauguration in Washington, DC. I know many fans knew that we went to Washington but found it difficult to find any mention of our performance. That is because we did not play at one of the 10 "inaugural balls" that were covered by the international press. We performed at a much more intimate and private party that was held in honor of all the new or "freshman" Senators and Congressmen. Steve Cropper flew in and we elected to take the tour bus from New York since it's just a few hours away. (I don't think we stopped laughing the whole way down) "Blue Lou" was down there already. You may have seen him on the news shaking hands with Obama. Lou always is in the right place at the right time (musically speaking as well!) Two of my best friends who have both played in my own band in New York City, came to our gig. (They are in Bon Jovi's band and were down there playing at one of balls) We had them come up and play with us on Sweet Home Chicago and it was ... sweet!.
We are looking forward to playing a lot more if our schedules will allow and next week I am going over to Blue Lou's house to try to work on future plans. He and I will put aside some time from that meeting so that we can rattle off another post.
Just for fun, I am going to send a second post after this. I am sending i separately because many may not care to read it ... understandably. What is it? Well, I have somehow received the reputation of being the "John Belushi" of gig announcements in New York City. It has become expected of me and I just write stream of consciousness garbage. There are a lot of inside jokes that only certain guys in the band or New York studio musicians would get but, since this one has Blues Brothers references ... I'll post it.
Til the next time, thanks for all your support.

Change is coming!
Change is coming, you say?
Change is coming, you say?
And it's just a few hours away?
Well, it couldn't come soon enough I say.

The FBI agents looked quite disappointed and made no attempt to hide their disgust this morning when they were forced to release me back into the foster care custody of my band mates in the official Blues Brothers Band. Their parting words were a stark reminder to me that my potential deportation to Guantanamo is still a possibility after the Inauguration ceremonies are completed. Additionally, I should not ignore the fact that I still remain on the outgoing administration's list of "flight risks" along with my ex-accountant Bernie Maddoff. Well, it's great to smell the sweet aroma of freedom and change in the air. (Not the change that the new administration has promised to bring about. I'm talking about the sweet smell of the 2 quarters, 1 dime, 3 nickels and 7 pennies that are clenched in my sweaty palm. Talk about change I can believe in? It's all the money I have left after the last 8 years.)
Anyway, this temporary pardon clears me for being able to have a ringside seat, and even to participate in this historic event, as I will jet down to D.C. with the Blues Brothers and.... what? ... excuse me? ... what? ... oh, sorry. Apparently we're not taking the Blues Brothers plane. I guess we're taking Amtrak. Well, that's cool too cause it's sort of like a freedom train and not unlike the pilgrimage that Barack Obama and Joe Biden just took from Philly to Washing ... pardon? No train either? Oh. OK. Yeah, the tour bus is just fine by me. It's only a few hours drive from NYC to DC and there are drinks and snacks and sleeper bunks and drinks and food and a microwave and videos and DVD’s and drinks so the ride with the boys should be a blast as it always ... excuse me? I'm not on the tour bus with the rest of the band?
This just in. I appears that "management" has decided, because this is such a historic event, that we must take advantage of the advertising angle of the occasion and we should do everything in our power to keep the Blues Brothers brand name in the forefront of the publics view. So now, under the auspices of something the management suits like to call "continuity of product", I have been relegated to driving "Blue Lou" Marini down to Washington in the Bluesmobile. Yes. Yes, I do. Yes I do, I SAID!!! yes, … I do have to wear the suit, hat and glasses on the way down. Yes, I have to quote the movie the whole way down too, although Lou has already told me he's taking a handful of Xanex and chugging a 1982 Château Lafite Rothschild at the entrance to the Lincoln tunnel. He says I shouldn't expect too much in the way of conversation out of him.
Now, I've been fortunate to have played at a few of these 'events of state' before and I can tell you from experience, security is tight. It's like a giant club date that's 10-month's pregnant with extreme hemorrhoids. They have sent me my itinerary for the gig with specific guidelines of decorum and apparently a special addendum sheet that the CIA has made personally for me. How nice. I'm looking it over right now and...
#1 ... apparently, when Obama enters the room, I am to avert my eyes. Interesting.
#2 - If he decides to chat or hang with the band ... I'm not allowed in the room. Wha?
#3 - As a consolation prize, I may remain on stage to sing and play if Bill Clinton comes up with his saxophone to jam with us.
(Apparently, he's a huge Marini fan, which figures. - they're both convicted sax offenders)
#4 - Says here, "Caution!!! - It's electrified!" *
What's electrified?
… follow asterisk to page two and …
.... there it is
* Oh, it appears that "management" has decided to construct a chicken wire fence around MY portion of the stage (something about "continuity of product" again) and that the CIA has decided to electrify it so that my actions on stage are what they like to refer to as "restricted" or “contained.”
#5 - No inviting Nancy Pelosi back to the green room for a lap dance.
#6 - Lay off the between song banter about how "The South is gonna rise again!"
#7 - Once in the green room, I am not to dine with the rest of the band who will be served the White House chef's Surf and Turf special.
(my special "Happy Meal" will consist of four (not 3) fried chickens and a coke. Desert menu: Dry white toast.) Again with the "continuity of product"?
#8 – No showing “Uncle Jonny’s magic tricks” to Malia and Sasha (I'll bet the FBI has already started a file on me for this one)
#9 - No lap dances with Dennis Kucinich either (Editorial note: he's a spinner)
... and then the list goes on and on.
Well, I for one don't understand what the entire hubbub is all about. I know how to behave in public, in general. Besides, what little I may lack in the social graces, I will always have my Blues Brothers brethren to coach me through the more intricate parts of Washington diplomacy or social moeurs that may have escaped me. I can be forgiven for those shortcomings. After all, I am the baby in the band chronologically speaking, if not in other ways. I get a lot of support from my band mates and I am confident that I can learn all the proper protocol prior to our Monday morning departure. And there is a great deal to learn too. For instance, did you know that during the inauguration week, since it only happens every 4 years, when you believe that you have discovered a secret service agent who is trying to remain undercover, it is customary to spit on their left shoulder or pinch their buttocks? Apparently, its' a sign of respect and recognition for the great clandestine service they provide for our President. (Jeepers Mr. Cropper - thanks for that nugget. I'll try it out first)
Well, see you when we get back … or when I get out.
Oh Damn! I just looked at item #10 on the itinerary. There's a whopping good chance we won't get to see Barack Obama while we're in Washington. Of all the grand parties taking place and prestigious venues to perform in during this inauguration, it would appear that our illustrious manager Glenn A. Palmer has booked our gig at some place called… I don't know … something like … Charlie's Steakhouse or … Bob's Country Bunker … or something like that. He's said it was for reasons that I wouldn't understand. Something called, "continuity of product."
Oh well.
Wish us luck.

I've always thought that if John Belushi had still been in our midst, he and Dan would have surely played "Sweet Home Chicago" on Nov 4th, at Grant Park, to congratulate the new president.

Somehow, I like the notion that the Blues Brothers Band was involved in favor of Mr O.

The posts were funny indeed !

That was funny! I like the "Continuety of Product" stuff, you got a great sense of humor! I wish that the show would have been on T.V for us to see...man you got ripped off on that part.

Thank y'all for the kind words. Like I said, some of the stuff in the post were "inside jokes" but there was enough Blues Brothers stuff so I thought I'd pass it on. Very glad it was somewhat enjoyable. There were a few promotional photos taken with the band the day of the inauguration of the Band, overlooking the Capital Building. If I get to see them, I'll see if we can get some kind of "exclusive" release for the fans on this site and post them here. Blue Lou and I are always talking about how appreciative we all are about the fans support and enthusiasm so, if there is a way that we can reciprocate, we will try our best. We are nothing without you ... and great music ... and a good bottle of wine ... and you.
