Ok, so I got a new laptop, and Vista's on it. I've had a lil while now, and the things just aren't solving themselves.

1) Why do my folders keep reincarnating? I swear I delete the My Music folder freakin 7 times a day!

2) Why do my folders keep reorganizing themselves? Everytime I log on, my folders are in a different order, it's very very irritating.

3) Why do I have to keep certain folders? I am a minimalist, I don't like having stuff I don't use around me. It freaks me out. So when I try to delete, move, rename, whatever the 'Contacts' folder or 'Desktop' folder my compy has a stroke and DIES! Why? I can understand the 'Favorites' folder and 'Documents' and 'Pictures' but I don't USE them so I want them GONE! But everytime I try to delete them; stroke time for compy.

Arg.

I have sent an ungodly amount of emails and even a letter or two to Windows, but it's like whispering at a wall. I've tried searches, but none of them work!

HELP!

joking, of course.

I had Vista for about 6 weeks on my laptop, ended up downgrading back to XP!

I think some folders can't be deleted if they're part of Windows. And Vista is now designed to stop people from "breaking" their computer by deleting certain things, and also you have to constantly confirm changes as you're installing new software.

But apparently you CAN delete those folders!
Here's a guy who posts how to do it:

Delete My Music, My Documents, My Pictures Folders Forever
Do you delete the My Music, My Documents or My Pictures folders only to find they have returned to Windows later? Delete them forever with these steps.

  • Hold down the Windows Key and press R.
  • Type regsvr32 /u mydocs.dll and click OK.
  • Now try deleting the folders. They should stay gone as long as that DLL isn’t registered again.
Please be aware that many applications may use these folders. Removing them may cause problems.

To undo this change, use the command regsvr32 mydocs.dll.

I'm not too sure why the order of your folders keep changing, where are the folders? Are they your desktop folders/icons, start menu folders, or in My Computer?

I really want to go back to XP liek on my Desktop, but I don't have a copy lying around.

Ok, so I tried that, I copy and pasted the code and everything, but I got this:

"RegSvr32

The module "mydocs.dll" was loaded but the entry point DllUnregisterServer was not found.

I just want to delete the "My Music" folder! I don't need it!!!! Nothign else!

Make sure that "mydocs.dll" is a valid DLL or OCX file and then try again."

joking, of course.

Hmm I just realised those instructions were for XP, not that the guy bothered to write that (worst designed site I've ever seen).

It says you can move the folders:
How to move the special folders in Windows Vista

And it says you can remove the folder from your desktop:
Delete Special Folders Geek Zone

That's all I can find unfortunately. Maybe you can change My Music to point to your real music collection, mine's at F:\music\albums for example?

I think the special folders are so deeply embedded into Vista that there's no way to permanently remove them.

Looks like those folders are nessecary form Vista's point of view.
What makes you so desperate about it that you almost go crazy?
Is there no fu##ing way to live with them?
Why not simply disregard what's bothering?

Cause I CAN'T!

I'm a minimalist, if I don't use it, and it doesn't have a function, it NEEDS to go!

joking, of course.

Check the security permissions on the properties. Depending on what part of the directory tree they are located in, they could be "protected" under widnows file protection.

Blimey, how old is this thread.

here's my advice..

1.. uninstall Vista & chuck the disk in the bin
2.. re-install Windows XP
3.. Download BricoPack Vista Inspirat Ultimate 2 on CrystalXP.net - Shell Packs

then you will have a copy of XP that will "run" & look like Vista to impress your mates, but of course without the problems. :(

*laugh* xD

Or just install Ubuntu, where there are packages for making Gnome and KDE look like Vista too. =P

i did try Ubuntu, but then found 90% of the software i needed to use for web designing wouldn't install!

Yes, I know there are programs to download where you can install Windows programs & run .exe files etc on Linux/Ubuntu, but then you just open the system up to MS Windows errors & problems, if you want Windows errors' just install Windows! It's a bit like installing draft excluders, double glazing & loft insulation to keep your house warm & then knocking a huge hole in the wall with a sledge hammer!

True, Wine doesn't always run all the programs I want. There's a bunch of stuff I rely on for audio editing, because I find Linux audio editors somewhat unfriendly, and said programs that I rely on, don't work on Wine. -.- Photoshop can sometimes be a tad suspect, as well.
