Remember the Superfans sketch after the Bears fired Ditka? The one that just has Swerski (I forget whether it was Bill or Bob) penning a letter to the Bears expressing disappointment over Ditka's firing?
Well...in the letter, Swerski detailed a detour he would be taking into the city so that he would not pass Soldier Field. But danged if I can remember what that detour is. Anybody remember? I checked youtube, fuzzymemories.tv, the Chicago forums at straightdope.com, and the SNL transcripts site (they have transcripts from the episode where this sketch aired, but not of the sketch itself), but no luck.
I remember that the detour involved Balbo, Cermak, and a Walgreen's...
Superfans' Soldier Field detour??

That's the thing! Everybody remembers the skit, but nobody seems to have any kind of RECORD of it -- written or on tape! (well, except Comedy Central, because I did see them re-run it a few times)
Classic skit, too..."Bear Down, Chicago Bears" playing in the background on a piano...the cheese stain....and of course the appearance by Ditka himself...

Who was the host of that show? I have some VHS tapes with early 90's shows. Stuff I recorded, not store bought. It's amazing that something like this is so hard to find.
Heck of a question, Dauber!

Wow, it was the cold opening! Y'know ... looking at that transcript, I don't think I've ever seen this particular episode. The odds of me having it on tape has just plunged to 1%. I will take a boo, though.

It was classic.
Bob/Bill Swerski is writing a letter of protest, and at one point he (or one of the other Superfans) spills cheese sauce on the letter...then he writes something like, "You may have noticed there's a cheese stain on this letter. That was intentional. It represents the stain you left on Chicago sports..."

That is flippin' hilarious!

GOT IT!!!! It took a free 30-day membership to Netflix to get it, though.
The detour: exiting onto Cermak (which is impossible, btw), then turning right onto Wabash, keep going until you get to the Walgreen's (not sure where the Walgreen's is on Wabash, but this is Chicago -- there's a Walgreen's every ten feet except around Fulton Market!). The next step was something like "bang a louie onto La Salle"...I don't know what a "louie" is...I know that "bang a u-ey" is slang for making a U-turn, but I don't know.....all I know is that La Salle and Wabash are parallel, La Salle is a full city block west of Wabash, and comes to a dead end at many points.
Anyway, the last step is to turn onto Balbo and take that to Lake Shore Drive, which again is impossible.
And much to my disappointment, they replaced "Bear Down, Chicago Bears" with some generic sad piano music.
Swerski narrated even the return address, which was something like 7216 South Cicero, Chicago. Thing is...that far south is actually Burbank....in that area, Midway Airport at about 6300 S. Cicero is the town's southern border....but still, it was great to see that again.
And it was Carl Wollarski (Robert Smigel's character) who spilled the cheese sauce on the letter...

a "louie" is a left turn.
Thanks for finding the skit.
I've been watching SNL on Netflix in pretty much a non-stop marathon.
(Almost finished with season 5)
But I think I'll skip ahead to watch that episode.
