I hope someone can answer this...

I'm a spectacles wearer & want to know if i could get a pair of wayfarer's made to prescription.

Currently i have 2 choices..

1) wear a pair of regular specs with dark lenses i.e. non-raybans that looks similar.. but they are not exactly realistic.
these were my last..

2) take the lenses out of my normal specs (older pair) & stick them to the inside of the lens of the cheap drees-up replica shades for the more authentic look.

before anyone says it, contact lenses are not an option.

In the past i have worn the dress-up shades over the top of my normal specs, but this proves uncomfortable, another option i suppose is to take a pair of the dress-up shades to an optician along with my prescription & ask nicely, however that kind of defeats the object, when i could do that with the genuine article.

I have seen opticians selling Rayban sunglasses & some are selling the right style.. such as these, however i can't seem to find any information to say they can me made with prescription lenses.

Any help appreciated :BB:

I was just going to do the same thing!!!:BB::P:P

Where there's a will.....

There's some really high-quality non-Ray Bans out there but they can be a pain to find.

I got mine online:

these are what i usually buy/use - in fact i've an account with a wholesaler so i can buy them to sell on at gigs as well -

however i don't know where i would stand for licensing purposes, so before i sell them i need to find out. The manufactuers do license them, but i don't know how that covers me as a reseller, however it was the manufacturer who put me on to the wholesalers.. this is what the manufactures offer & their license terms.

As i say though, i did the trick of putting a pair of regular lenses from a pair of my old frames on the inside of the lenses onto a pair of these, they look the part but in certain lights you can see the lens on the back & the putty or glue used to hold them in stands out a mile.

I actually know a guy who works for an opticians, so i suppose in theory i could ask him to fit me some prescription lenses to a pair of these, but if the shades only cost me a few quid ("bucks" for our commonweath / colonial cousins) to buy, then why bother as the cost of specailly made lenses may be a lot more trouble than they are worth, so i may as well go for the genuine article rather than some 2nd rate knock-off.

I've worn prescription Ray-Ban Wayfarers for years, they've never been a problem to get from an optometrist... but they ain't cheap, they can run close to $200 depending on the strength of the script. Worth it though, I do wear contacts on occasion and have a pair of standard Wayfarers for that, but my scripts are much more comfortable to wear.

I recall reading in the other thread (i.e. the one i thought i was replying to) that Elwood72 (i think it was) said he drove at night wearing his shades.

A couple of years ago when looking for costume props i came across a set of replica blues shades that actually had mesh lenses, from the outside they looked like normal shades with dark lenses, but to the wearer were perfectly suited for use at night as they didn't block light. According to the guy in the store he said they were for the nightclub market or for people working in dark environments such as blues musicians who want the authentic look. I didn't buy them but wish i had as i haven't seen them anywhere since, so i guess they weren't that popular & were withdrawn.

I suppose if anyone did want to drive at night in a pair of replica shades for that more authentic look & not have to worry about the reduced light, the mesh shades i would think are the way to go.

Incidentally on my bike helmet I have a dark visor fitted, this is illegal to use at night, but it's perfectly legal for me to wear shades & ride my bike at night or to drive a car & of course it's legal to drive a car with tinted windows at night, provided they aren't a certain level of tint. Yes i can't figure it out either!

I did the same thing;and found out through trial-and-error that everything you've said is true.It leads to a delemia:If the lenses are dark enough to not see the lenses behind them, they're way too dark to wear at all, except on the sunniest of days.

I'm curious about the mesh lenses;but I have an unusually high sensitivity to normal light in the first place,so in my case it's a moot point.

It's still intriguing,though.

I haven't heard of those mesh lenses either, that'd be interesting to try! When I was younger I used to wear my shades at night as well, but now I'm getting my Old Guy Eyes and definitely can't get away with it safely.
