I know we've discussed Blues Brothers 3 (should it ever happen) & what songs we'd like to see/hear, however I've been mulling something over.

One of the songs I'd like to see performed in a 3rd film is the Paul Simon song "You can call me Al". I know you are probably scratching your head & thinking I'm a clot, but go with me on this....

If you remember in the video, Chevy Chase "sung" the song, Chevy of course was another one of the more famous people to come from Saturday night live, so I'm sure a small cameo could be used somewhere & then on come the band singing "You can call me EL" As in "Elwood", the song lyrics could be changed here & there to make it more fitting & Chevy could maybe do some miming. Have a listen to the song or watch the video sometime & you will probably see what i mean if you think Blues Brothers.

In addition to this, i think we can safely say that a Blues Brothers 3 would be the last film from the series & probably one of the last films from the old school of Saturday night live, so you could embrace the whole idea & have numerous Saturday night Live references such as Wayne & Garth are spotted in a Blues bar & as the Blues Mobile pulls away after the gig, Elwood turns the radio on & on comes Bohemian Rhapsody & the band parody the famous routine.

Also you could throw some Coneheads reference in there, an idea... the band members get abducted by a space ship & brought together on Remulak (quicker reunion than chasing the band members all over Chicago for half the film) Dan Aykroyd could even play 2 parts & the Conehead aliens could instruct Elwood he has to perform again & they are "on a mission from Beldar" to put on a show to save the Coneheads & it's been discovered that Blues music keeps them alive... or you could go back to Wayne's World & have Garth & Wayne lead Elwood into the desert to meet the ghost of Slim Harpo (King bee reference) who tells him that Zee Blues (James Belushi) is his long-lost Brother & that he must track him down & persuade him to fulfill his destiny & "Slim" (as opposed to "Jim" - Jim Morrison) tells him that Zee is going to be at a Toga party (Animal House reference) & that Elwood must go there (dressed as a Bee perhaps) & persuade Zee to join the band

OK I'm not a script writer, but I'm sure it's going to be better than a 2nd remake of BB1, so let's get it made.

I love this idea...

Seriously, you are right that this would probably be the last incarnation of BB with the original cast. I personally would prefer a prequel with new actors, but that's just me.

Still... miming is always good.

They are doing it with Star Trek.. making a prequel movie i mean & i dare say there will be another film featuring the Next Generation cast or even a Deep space Nine movie coming along one day as well.

Who's to say they can't do both a prequel & a sequel? it's been done before.

Reason i said to have "miming" is of course when you hear that song, one of the 1st things that pops into your head is Chevy Chase & the fact he is miming. Really he made (not in the litertal sence, but in the commercial sence) that song more popular & like i say he is a former SNL face who of course worked with the more familiar faces from the Aykroyd / Belushi days.

I guess what i'm really saying is there should be some tie-in to Saturday night live's glory days by bringing in the old faces & BB3 would be the perfect platform. They aren't getting any younger & this may the be last chance to do something to give the BB films a good send off - at least in it's current format, not counting prequels or further spin-off's.

I'm in the UK so despite that fact we don't see many of the Saturday night live shows unless they get shown as video specials, clips in repeat shows or when they release one of these spin-off films (although we do get some of the modern shows over here now, but they are shown on late night TV on one of the digital channels).

For instance when the 1st Wayne's World got released & became popular we actually did get to see some of the clips of when "Waynes World" was just a feature slot on SNL.. A bit ironic really as Mike Myers spent a lot of his earlier TV career working in the UK doing spoofs on UK breakfast TV, kids programmes etc & nobody really "knew" him this side the water until the 1st Wayne's World film came out.

Despite the Blues Brothers being quite versatile, I just don't think it fits with any of their repertoire.

I understand. And also know that SNL really never made it big in the UK - even though it still has its fans.

As far as the old/glory days of SNL, I actually wouldn't include anything after 1980. That's when there was the big cast turn over. So even though there are good bits that come after that, I would say that a BB that honors SNL would probably not even need those bits. That's just my opinion, though.

If someone does a prequel, I have some great Elwood/Jake early days scenarios rolling around in my brain... So, Mr. Aykroyd, please contact me...

Which is why i said the song "Could" be changed to "Call me El"

Besides, they made other songs fit.. Rawhide, Funky nassau, Riders etc.. not exactly Blues songs that would fit in a blues set.

With all due respect -wolfie, I appreciate what you're trying to convey. Good ideas but something that true purists wouldn't go near. Dan's idea of the 3rd. movie is a couple of girls finding Blues Brothers stuff in a trunk and reviving interest in the genre. Plus it wouldn't be a theatrical release but rather straight to DVD. Dan missed the boat thinking that, even in fiction, interest would wane for the boys... I think it's cheesy.
(But hey, Dan's the millionaire, not me.)

I'm on the prequel boat.
I'm on a quest to get Jo_'s material into Dan's hands!!! It makes the most sense in that it would not only please die hard fans like us but spark interest in a new generation of youn'uns that weren't even a glimmer in daddy's eye back in 1980.

This is must read material..!http://www.fanlib.com/submission/view/print.do?submissionId=45h4m0

*EYES BUG OUT!*

Hey, Blue, thanks for the recommendation. Wow. Very sweet of you to say.

*blush*

I have no delusions of writing anything official for BB. But knowing people enjoy what I write is wonderful! Thank you!

Cheers!

I echo your sentiments Blueblood, & agree with you, still there is nothing wrong with putting an idea forward & you never know Dan may be reading this & taking it with a pinch of salt & having a chortle to himself or thinking "mmm good idea" however, If i'm true to myself i'm not going to see this happen, this will never be put onto film but it's nice to put an idea forward & know that other people think the idea is a good (or bad) one. Still some of the most successful ideas have come about from stupid suggestions or been mocked before they were taken seriously, so who knows.

There is a rule in Showbiz & that rule is "leave them wanting more" so it's not that dan can't be bothered, he's probably seen the importance (& money making oportunity) of the cult following & realised it's bigger & worth more to him than raking in a few million at the box office & seeing the Blues Brothers fade away into obscurity, so by "killing" the project he's keeping the phenominon alive & of course keeping tribute bands in work & taking royalties from record sales they insipre people to buy. You never know if a 3rd film came along, this forum & website may well cease to be because of saturation, but with the current status it's keeping things going just fine & by the blues brothers being "dead", he is in fact keeping them alive.

Just take a look at how the Police Academy films panned out.. 1st film was brilliant, 2 films, it was still superb & the fans just wanted more... 6 films down the line later & although the market was popular it was nearly exhausted & took a lot to drum up interest because everyone was bored & i don't see a "Police academy Central" type website (there probably is one, but it's not as popular as this site i dare bet).. if they'd stopped at 3 or 4 films, they would of probably been in the same vein as the Blues Brothers with a cult following & millions more fans waiting because that carrot is dangling on that string in front of them. Star Wars was the same, I was hooked after the 1st film but 4 films is more than enough & now i just get bored when people talk about collecting Star wars figures or that the new novel is being written.

I was ignoring the words and judging the song on it's musical style. I just can't see them performing it.
