There was a contest on Fanlib that I entered. The contest was to write a story about a character when they were still a child.

This is a series of three short works, pulled from two other stories. They all worked well for a piece about Elwood's relationship with Curtis growing up.

As Close to a Father as He Ever Would Have
by Jo Z. Pierce

Elwood's life lessons - on women, on music, on honesty, and "being black"... as taught by Curtis.

I have been doing a LOT of Jake and Elwood flashback scenes. I just love creating Elwood-as-a-boy moments in fanfic!

I have also been thinking of pulling a whole bunch of these flashback pieces out of my other stories and posting them as something else. (Especially since they may be buried in longer fic).

Let me know what you think.

Oh, wow... thanks sista!

My first reaction was to post it here (since there are some fics posted here, so I figured it would be ok). However, there are a few words in there which might make it 17+ reading material.

Of course, there is nothing there that wouldn't be in the original movie, so I don't see it as bad. But...

Mods?

Let me see if I can edit it without losing integrity. Otherwise, I will cross post it elsewhere. Maybe my livejournal.

Thanks, Soul-sista!

But what is it with your computer? :BB:

All of my fanfic is also archived at Fanfiction.net

The only story that isn't archived thre is this one, since it was written for a specific contest on the other site.

Cheers!
Jo

Dang it ! I LOVED that story to Pierces !!!

(sorry for the pun but could na resist.)

The story is great and it sent me back to the social commentary thread about race vs. culture. I love when Curtis explains the boys that they were not that different, they were the same, him the old Black man and the two orphans from a poor background. Indeed, they are at the same level on the social ladder.

The end with the tribute paid by Elwood to Rev. King made me cry.

Oh man I wish I could write like that... *sigh*

Thanks Vinnie! I have been hoping you'd read it, since we are both getting into that social commentary thread. I thought this was a powerful way to show what I have been thinking about.

Me, too. I think that is probably the best chapter I have ever written. Don't mean to brag - since some of my stuff is just trash, especially in other fandoms - but that chapter was something else.

I had to do something with the fact that BOTH Curtis and Elwood had pictures of Reverend King on their walls. There was really a back story there, I thought. Plus, the Elvis connection had to be done, too...

The part that was my personal favorite was the whole idea of Elwood sitting at Curtis' feet, watching the tv, and that whole scene.

*sigh* Elwood Angst. Nothing I love exploring more than that...

Except maybe Elwood Angst in childhood.

Thanks again for the great review. ;)

Yeah, the last lines about Elwood witnessing Curtis breaking down was very powerful. Jake was the lucky one for not seeing that. He would have become mad while Elwood was sad and anxious.

Go ahead with the idea of Elwood's angst as a kid. I have the feeling he must have been quite like that, hence his clamming up most of the time. That's why I'm disappointed by BB2K, Elwood's character is not enough in depth while he should have been on the verge of mental breakdown when learning Jake's demise.
