The next time you see the movie (original) on AMC (American Movie Classics), if you get that channel, watch it for a bit and compare it with your millionth-view autopilot sense and report back as to whether or not you think the audio sounds strange - like a tape that's starting to stretch, not slow enough to sound really warped, but enough that it sounds...off. (It may well be the case...do broadcasters still use tape-based media these days?)
It's bugged me the last three times I've caught it on this channel. I have an ear for "off" sounds (I've always known when my tapes are starting to kick the bucket.), but I just want to see if I'm the only one that hears it. I sent an email to AMC about it, but I don't know what will come of it.

AFAIK everybody still uses tapes; not sure if it's VHS or something else. I've seen some movies on TV recently that I also have on DVD, and you can tell they aren't showing the remastered DVD version.

It seems to me that SCTK sounds a little faster. Like the part when they're driving past the Chicago skyline doesn't match with the next shot of them driving towards the orphanage. Also when the pull up in front of the orphange, you can still hear some singing, yet on the DVD versions you just hear music fading away as Elwood puts it in park.

I hate the TV dubs - on any channel. It sounds like they used the same dub voice guy for both Jake and Curtis. I wish someone would get together and re-do it.

It seems likely that they would time compress it to a degree in order to make sure it fits the allotted airing time frame. So things probably do go a little faster than normal (especially if everyone's voices sound just a little higher than usual, a telltale sign of compression).

On the contrary, the AMC broadcast sounds slower than usual to me. I would expect it to sound faster too, but it's the opposite.

Maybe it's faster so that they can squeeze more commercials in, or make the movie run shorter?

I would suspect that AMC is probably stretching it a hair to fit into a specific time slot.
Truth be told, I haven't watched AMC in YEARS, ever since they started running commericals and a lot of crap movies. (BB not included, natch.)

Yes, yes, yes!!!
I thought I was the only one who noticed how lame and artificial the BB movie on AMC was. The voice-over guy (whoever he was) sounded like he was either intoxicated or half asleep. Jake and Elwood did not sound like themselves at all. Aretha's "Shooooot" made her sound like a dude living on skid row, all the songs were entirely too darn slow, the music at the concert at the Palace Hotel, if you notice, the audience's timing to the beat of the music is WAAAAAY off. But what really irked me was in the beginning, when they screwed up my favorite song in the movie, "She Caught The Katy". It sounded to generic. Sounded like a high school band was rehearsing the song.
Okay, since we now know that AMC can't show a decent movie, everybody go run out and buy the DVD!
