It's Sunday night, I'm bored so what better way to kill some time then to try and figure out what is 106 miles from Chicgo. What I found was a little interesting, amusing and most likely not a coincidence:

There is a place called The North Shore Country Club in Mequon, WI.....similar to the name of The South Shore Country Club near Chicago IL. Also, if you type in the physical address into mapquest of the club in Mequon: 3100 W Country Club Dr, Mequon, WI and caclulate the miles to Chicago, it comes up with 105.71 miles, which rounded up would be 106 miles.....to Chicago.

Now is that a coincidence? Due to the fact that both names are very similar and the close proximity of Mequon to Milwaukee and I-94, I don't think so. If anybody else has more theories on this, let me know.

This also may be an obscure link, but a link nontheless: Mark Metcalf, the crazy guy from the Twisted Sister music videos and most notably the ROTC instructor from Animal House currently owns a bar in Mequon, WI. John Landis directed Animal House. Probably nothing, but interesting.

Peace,
Monty:BB:

The name of the restaurant in Mequon, WI that Mr Metcalf owns is called the LIbby Montana. In March of 2005, a reporter sat down and interviewed him. Here is an excerpt from that interview regarding John Belushi [MM is Mark Metcalf]:

MM: Yeah, you’ve got to sneak it in. That’s a constant. Like, the first time I met John Belushi, I was eating fried chicken waiting for the curtain to go up at the Delacorte Theatre in New York; Central Park. And I was with a friend of mine, John Heard, who kind of knew Belushi before Animal House. This was 1976, before Saturday Night Live.
[A WAITRESS APPROACHES THE TABLE]
Waitress: (to Mark) You have a phone call.
WC: That’s fine, because I have to go to the restroom. We’ll pick it back up at Belushi and fried chicken.
MM: Right. Belushi and fried chicken.
[MARK TAKES THE CALL, AND WAYNE AND FPHATTY BOTH USE THE RESTROOM]
MM: Okay, so Belushi sat down and ate all our fried chicken, and the potato salad that my girlfriend had made. So he’s telling us how he had this meeting with this guy named Lorne Michaels up in the NBC building, and he wanted him to do this live theatre gig. And Belushi shot up on Michaels’ desk and was screaming at him about how horrible television is. "Why would I want to do anything involving TV? It’s terrible! It’s despicable! All it does is advertise!" And, according to Belushi, Michaels is just sitting there calmly, and he says, "That’s why you should do it; because it’s so terrible, and you won’t do it badly. You won’t do it dishonestly. You won’t do it just to sell stuff. So come and do it, because that’s what we’re doing here at Saturday Night Live."

Here is a current pic of Mr Metcalf in his diner. I'm definitely going to have to stop up there sometime and ask him about the 106 mile coincidence:

Here is my theory. Back in the day, Mr Metcalf and Mr Belushi played golf or were near the Club. They then decided to head together to Second City in Chicago. For some reason or another, someone noticed that it was 106 miles and the rest is history. Yes, I am insane. I'm going to sleep now to wake for another day of my mundane life. Later

Peace

The truth is...it depends on where in Chicago you mean...while North Shore Country Club might be 105.7 miles from the South Shore Cultural Center (as it's now called), remember that they were heading to the Loop, which is a few miles north of where the SSCC is (SSCC is a little bit south of where Lake Shore Drive ends). Now, the actual Chicago city limit itself would probably only be about 90 miles from the Plaza Hotel. :)

and another bump.
I wondered if the "106 miles to Chicago" was based on anything since the ballroom and Lake Wazopamoni weren't actual places.

Is there a sign that says "CHIGACO -- 106" anywhere, someone could get a bluesmobile photo with?

Well, the direction was never mentioned, so we don't know if it was North, South, East or West of Chicago, so it all depends on which way ya go
Its not an act... Its a way of life

Yes - It was opened by Mark Metcalf & his wife at the time in 2000. He has since sold his share of the business but stays closely connected to the operation.
