For those who like to read, or have thought about reading, but are confused by the terms used. I know I often was, and occasionally I still run into a phrase I don't know.

I found a new fan fiction archive that seems to be a wonderful alternative to FanFiction.net. It's called FanLib, and the BB category is, as of now, completely empty. I might move some of my fics over (as a secondary host) later this week, so I'll come back and give a better review of how their submission system works.

Okay, I've imported several of my fanfics over to FanLib, so now the BB section has some bulk with my stuff and 3 stories from Delilah Kelley. (All holdovers from FFN)
I must say, I love FanLib's system! If you already have stories on FanFiction.net, you can have them imported to your FanLib account! Less stress, less mess, and you don't have to worry about the system eating half your formatting.
They also have little display styles and a thumbnail/picture option to enhance your listing! So awesome!
I also like their ratings system. You can rate a story with stars (1 thru 5), which is a nice feature for those who don't like leaving written reviews.
Some features take some getting used to, but they're well worth it.
ETA: Take note of the "Adult Filter" in the header (far right corner of the blue bar.) The site automatically shows only stories rated "All Ages" or "13+".

Now I see what the pic of Artesia was for. I got an idea for some non-BB fanfic, but finding time to work on it is hard when I have other things that came along first.
Is it possible to have two versions of the same story? What I mean is to have one version suitable for all ages, and another version not suitable for all ages?

I've heard mention of people doing that namely with romance and slash fics, putting the version with explicit sex on AdultFanFiction.net, then editing it to have "nondescriptive descriptions" but still the same basic plot and lovey squishy feelings that they can post FanFiction.net (especially after the Great NC-17 Cleansing on FFN)
A friend of mine and I were working on a split-version story once. One version had a violent beginning and the other had a funny, tame beginning. We actually never posted it anywhere because it was a) never finished and b) it was marinated in a saturated vat of Mary Sues/self-inserts. (It was amusing for us, anyway, the BB2000 brothers + Jake kidnapped all of us from school.)
ETA: By the way, I happened to notice last night that you have to be logged in even to rate stories with stars. A little bit of a drag, but signing up for an account is easy, and a lot of people have accounts just for reading/reviewing, even if they're not writers.

Erm...well, there appears to be a big downside to FanLib's appearance...and a whole LJ community for it. http://community.livejournal.com/life_wo_fanlib/
Fair to give everyone here both sides of the "issue", I guess.

Hmmm.
Somehow I strongly dislike the idea of my favorite legally questionable hobby being exposed under neon lights.
(Well, not my only favorite legally questionable hobby. But at least fanfiction doesn't make you want to eat an entire bag of chips at 1 in the morning. Eh heh.)

Starting a general information thread about Fanfiction Writers, Readers, and Communities.
(I didn't want to move into and hijack Takk's thread.)
Use it for general questions, announcements, or other community building info!
I will start off with this announcement:
A master student at Georgetown University is doing a study of fanfic writers. She needs people to take a survey for her study.
Take the fanfiction survey!

Wouldn't be hijacking, just adding to
Merged.

I ran across an interesting post in fanficrants about the difference of
Fanbase vs. Fandom
that uses a...colorful bit of hypothetical dialogue to illustrate the differences between the two.
