I know that before Belushi (Jake) died, there was a Blues Brothers II in the works. According to what I've read, Tino Insana (writer and friend of Belushi & Aykroyd) had been drafted to write a treatment for a proposed sequel.

But this sounds strange, as Dan had written the first movie. In fact, as legend has it, didn't Dan essentially write two movies, one with the storyline from the released movie and one that would have reunited the Bros. for another adventure??

It just seems weird that Tino Insana would have written the screenplay for the sequel when Dan apparently had enough ideas for more than just one movie.

Also, does anyone know if Dan's original screenplay (the 300 page-plus version) is out there. Not the final version that John Landis put together from Dan's original, but the one that Landis claimed had all these long descriptive passages and backstories for all the band members.

It's really a pity that Belushi died so young and we never got a real Blues Brothers sequel.

The 300+ (324?) page screenplay Dan wrote contained 2 movies worth of material, The Blues Brothers and Return of the Blues Brothers (not to be confused with the HOB concert).

It was handwritten, and filled with details of all the band members, how they were recruited, Jake and Elwood's childhood, and even complex diagrams for the Bluesmobile. John Landis turned it into a script, Judy Belushi and Tino Insana used the screenplay to put together Blues Brothers: Private (which includes much of the character's backstories), and Mitch Glazer used the screenplay to write the novel of the Blues Brothers (which is why it's so different from the movie and begins with Jake and Elwood as children).

Dan still has the screenplay as far as I know, but I don't think it's ever been copied or released anywhere.

It would be an interesting read, to be sure. Too bad it was never published in book form, as some screenplays are.

Then again, published screenplays are generally the shooting script and not an early draft. I think Dan had said he'd never seen a screenplay before that, so he wasn't familiar with the format.

I have dabbled in screenwriting and it is a very specific format. Dialogue and direction, mainly. I have a feeling Landis had to re-work Dan's first attempt at a screenplay so it would suit the industry standard and so that he as a filmmaker would be able to use it.

Does anyone have the link to the full shooting script of the blues brothers?

I've been looking around, and all i've found are chopped up pieces of junk.

As for the original, it just seems like Dan created some of the finest characters ever. Truly its sad that we didnt get much chance to see them explore all side. If John were around i'm sure a third movie would have been done.

Shooting script is here:

There were a few changes made so a few things don't match with the final movie. FYI the novelization of the movie was actually based on an earlier draft and tells a quite different story of how the band was put back together.

thanks man, i've been looking for this but end up finding a lot of shortened versions. Going to be a big help to me when writing a blues brothers fan script.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think he might be planning to write his own version of the sequel? I've thought about doing that a few times.

Fan Fiction is always fun to read, especially when it's done well by a fan who really knows the backstory and the characters properly.

Yes, some distinguished members here do that and they are really good at it : Jo Pierce and Takkuneg, these ladies have drafted some of the finest pieces of fanfiction I've ever read, all fandoms combined.

I kindly invite everyone here to check their works on FanLib.com and on FanFiction.net. They are just great ! They know their subject.

Scott, that's a link opening to a general page. Can you give a more precise link ? Or where to click to get to that doc ? You know me, I'm not a computer wizard... :BB:

Thanks !

My domain name expired last year and I wasn't reminded to renew it. It's not online anymore, and wouldn't do much good to email it because it doesn't really work properly offline.

Ah, it's a pity then, I was really curious to read about it. Nevermind.

That's not the original script, that's an early shooting script with some extra scenes and slightly different dialogue.

There was an original screenplay, which was the 300+ document containing both movies. That's never been released anywhere, only Dan would have that.

But tell me, it is only the beginning which is posted ? Unless I missed something ?

Y'all know I'm a genius when it comes to computer stuff... So where is the whole script ?

And yes, I agree that should be published. AS IS.
