Do you mean as the Blues Brothers, or their first musical performance together, or individually? Or their first sketches on the show?

Ok, we know that they used to warm up for the audience before the show. Does anyone know when was the very first time they appeared in the suit and glasses?

Well, I think John was in the very first SNL sketch. I believe it was the one where he was learning to speak English
Not sure what Dan's first sketch was. Or the first sketch that John and Dan were in together.
I don't know if they did a song together before King Bee, as part of another sketch.
Without details of the audience warm up they used to do, it's hard to know what they did.

i think that the first time they performed as the blues brothers in their full getup, on camera, was when they were the musical guests with steve martin as host. 76 i think?

I had to do some digging, but I found this post I made a few weeks ago about the songs on the Best of the Blues Brothers DVD. Here are the SNL songs from it in order of date:

I'm a king bee: SNL January 17th, 1976
I don't know: SNL April 22nd, 1978
I got everything i need almost:SNL November 18th, 1978
B movie boxcar blues: SNL November 18th, 1978
Soul man: SNL November 18th, 1978

There is one song missing, Hey Bartender. That's from the April 22nd, 1978 show, hosted by Steve Martin (thanks Chanood_Blues!)

http://snltranscripts.jt.org/77/77r.phtml
That's the full transcript of the episode. Click on the first one to see the introduction given before they performed for the first time :)
I really need to get a video of this, although I do have the full SNL Soul Man video now (including the Can't Turn You Loose introduction and ending)

You welcome. I got that episode somewhere, the intro by Paul Shaffer is funny, and John had the same hat of the I don´t Know number. But the episode I had doesn´t had the I Don´t Know number!

Steve is a very talented musician, he plays the banjo. I think it would have been a comedy-concert with funny songs. If you see it, get the Best of Steve Martin DVD (SNL). He does several great songs on it with the banjo, he's fantastic :BB:
When they say open for Steve Martin, the Blues Brothers were the opening act, followed by Steve.

I saw him on Letterman too, playing banjo in a great band :BB:

Ya learn something new every day. Also the Briefcase album sounds like alot of banter and stuffwas cut out.I was listening to it a couple days ago I was listening to Shotgun Blues and right after it John says "Shotgun Blues"then it goes straight to Groove Me.They haven't done that on any thing else were they didn't talk. Were they on a time limit or did a guy at Atlantic Records decide the concert was to long.

Could be that old records had a limit on how many minutes could fit on them. I have a lot of CDs that were originally released on vinyl, and the CDs include a bonus song or two, because CDs have more space.
