lets say some big time producer and director are doing a movie in chicago about what ever , and lets say some of the camera guys were talking about what happened here in 79 , with the big car chase and the standoff at city hall ,
the producer and director get interested and ask who is this guy your talking about , and they(the crew) procede to tell them the story of jake and elwood blues , the (p&d) seek out and find elwood , and do interveiws with him , the band , friends , wives and exs, ( aka spinal tap )
elwood tells the tale of how him and jake meet put the band together , and what happened to leed up to jakes arrest, and what elwood does to survive while jakes away , and what happens after his release leading up to the end of the first movie , then they go into what hapeend next , the trial, ( that should be good just to hear the charges read) the one and only album made ,why jake and elwood get seperated and what happenend to jake .
now i know i touched on a lot of what was posted by many diferent members here , and i thank them for there ideas!... but........
the only differance here is that this movie is ...as told by elwood , from his point of view in his own words , you could use clips from both movies. snl, and concert footage to flesh out the story line , for the younger jake and elwood , a lot of people suggested the kids from that drake and josh show off nick , they fit the parts and are of the age you need for the younger brothers .
i have a lot of time while driving ( i know i should be watching the roads )so i think up stuff like this , but it shure sounded better in my head .
so some thing different or just the same old same old ?
heres a new angle on a third movie

It sounds like a good idea for a 'mockumentary' almost

I like the idea but have one concern. They already tried to do a history of the band thing with Tom Davis and that Best of the Blues Brothers DVD, but Dan kept blurring the lines between the real history and the fictional history.
But this is just too good an idea to pass up I think. Since a movie version will probably never happen, what about a novelization? Probably the producer and director characters would have to be consolidated into a single character who just moved into Chicago from somewhere else. He could have a job at the Daley building and first hear about the events in 1979 from his new co-workers.
Doing it Forrest Gump style would mean having Elwood telling people about the good old days while sitting somewhere waiting for something.
Another possibility would be to drop the narrative perspective and just do a biography of Jake and Elwood.
Whichever route, the end result should be consistent with BB Private and as much of the Tom Davis interview as possible (probably between 50% and 75%).

Elwood sitting on the bench with briefcase (handcuffed with harp inside of course) waiting for Buster to pull up with the new car. As he tells people about the prequel to the Blues Brothers movie. How does that sound?

And instead of a leaf floating down, it could be an old pack of Chesterfield's, almost like Jake sent it down to Elwood from above

ok now thanks all for the replies :D
ok i look at it this way ... if and i do say if a third movie were to be made in the way i discribed ( gump style with him telling it ) you have to do it with the material only from the first two movies the blues brothers and bb2000,
who ever will have to write all new material for when they were kids putting the band together, jake and camille , the trial , what happened to jake ..etc... you realy cant use the blues brothers book people speak of or blues brothers private , except for very small referances , to the story
this movie would have to be new , not rehased out of bbprivate or the other book , this story would tell the tale and put it straight from the day they met to what elwood is doing today , and that includes buster, cab mac .
but the kicker to the story go's along with what some one posted above about elwood and his case , it go's like this ....
when elwood is compleatly gone with his story to the producer and director , they shake his hands , and yes one is in a hand cuff , but not to his brief case which is sitting besides him , it is to the rail inside of a ambulance , the last thing you see is a couple of men in white suits closing the ambulance doors saying ,
its all right now mr. ackryod, you'll all right soon after your rest at the "resort" just relax we will be there in no time .
one ambulance driver to another ...he realy thinks he is elwood blues , poor guy and such a great actor to crack up like that , shame
so what do you think , a great way to tie up loose ends and end it with a laugh ?? it could work , it did on newhart :D

hmm I don't know <cue song> lol
It would be funny, but it would be kinda weird at the same time. Cause Elwood and Akroyd are totally different characters, in thephysical sense (remember Best of?). I think if Elwood sat on a bench and retold BB1 and BB2000 people wouldn't come to see it. I think a prequel would get people to come out and see it.

It's never easy to appeal to everyone. Definitely an amusing way to end it with Dan being taken away; makes me wish I remembered that Newhart finale episode you're referring to. Did they tie it in with the Bob Newhart Show or something?
I dunno, ignoring what was established outside the two movies doesn't sit right with me. I think that people would be more inclined to see a dramatization of that than a retelling of the movies (essentially what Odupianist said).

the newhart thing was in the last episode the whole town is being over run buy japaneese investers who are gonna turn the sleepy little town into a golf resort .
the last thing you see is dick opening up a door and being hit in the head with a golf ball and colasping in a heap . you then see him in a bed from a old sit com of his and as he wakes up his sleeping wife to tell her the strange dream he just had , it turns out the wife is suzanne pleshet
9/0 and the set is from the old bob newhart show set in chicago , and bob as a shrink . here reply was oh go to bed bob of course it was a dream !!he reply was she should wear more sweaters !
ok and as for retelling of the first two movies they would just be clips of the movies not the whole things like
how they met
intro to curtis
what they did together as kids
the band
some early band gigs ( using pre-recorded shows )
what jake did to get arrested
what his trial was like
what he did in jail
what elwood did while jake was away
the reading of the charges in court after the arrest at the county building
what they did in jail together
why they were seperated
what happened to jake
what happened to elwood to make him so smart
i could go on and on , its just a telling from begining to end of the whole story once and for all to fill in the gaps to inform every one who wants to know , it could be just like gump retelling his life story , but the kicker would be that it would be dan thinking he realy is elwood , he is not , you see dan is dan elwood is elwood , elwood exsists , but dan is so wound up in the story he thinks he is elwood ! thats why dan has to go for a "rest "
by doing it this way you see the real elwood is still out there some where doing what ever it is that he does to survive !
