Along with the late Dave Prater, he was one half of the legendary R & B team Sam & Dave. Jake and Elwood are playing a cassette of some of their tunes when they're first pulled over in the first film.

Sam Moore & Dave Prater (Sam & Dave) also have the distinction of being the original performers of the song "Soul Man", which the original Blues Brothers performed on SNL and their first album "Briefcase Full Of Blues".

Slipped my mind earlier, but there is a video of him, The Sacred Hearts Band (Lead by Steve Cropper) and The Blues Brothers (Elwood, Mack, and Zee) performing "Soul Man" at the House Of Blues on the downloads page of the mainwebsite here.

There also the ones who perform "Soothe me", that's the song jake and Elwood listen to before they get pulled over by the cops.

My favorite Sam and Dave songs are "Wrap it up", "I thank you", "Hold on I'm Comin', "This is your World", "Soul Sister,Brown Sugar", and "Can't you find another way of doing it baby". You should check those out. "The best of Sam and Dave" good cd. check it out. The Fabulous Thunderbirds did a remake of "Wrap it UP" in the 80's but the S & D version is better. At least I think so.:D

I heard an interview with Sam Moore on the radio here in the UK. He said he was 'hurt' by the Blues Brothers version of Soul Man - I think he meant he was saddened that it has become the definitive version for a lot of people and the Sam & Dave original is forgotten. Sad. Bearing that in mind it's odd that he did BB2000, but then the interview was just a few months back, maybe he's changed his mind?

Actuelly it's David Porter not David Parter.
He died in the 1980's I think.

Here are two great film of their performence. Elwood stole a lot of their dancing:

First one is "Hold on I'm coming":

And this one is the great "When something is wrong with my baby". Check out Duck Dunn at the beginning. He's funny.

That's a fantastic video :D
I love how they do the slow bit in the middle of the song, the Blues Brothers Band did that once too, with Duck Dunn playing a great bass solo.

It's not an Elvis Costello tune. It was written by Allen Jones and Homer Banks. Sam and Dave released it in on May 30, 1967 (Stax 2188).

The videos I linked to are fro a great DVD called "Remebering Otis", which includes Highlights from the legendary "Hit the Road Stax" - Tour through the UK and France with Booker T. and the MG's and Sam & Dave. The perfomences of Carla Thomas Arthu Conley and Eddie Floyd are not on the DVD. You also find Otis last concert (Montreal Festival) on the DVD.

Everyone also should have the DVD "Memphis Soul Night" which got an amazing show from 1990 in Cannes with Booker T & the MG's, Sam Moore, Carla Thomas, Eddie Floyd, the Mar-Keys, the Memphis Horns and Phil Upchurch. Go out and get them!!

Wow! I never knew that. I really didn't think a songwriter like Elvis Costello did covers... learn something new everyday!

Still can't get over his voice. How old is he now? Might not have the moves still (maybe he has) but that guy can sing.

I think Memphis Soul night is the same DVD I have, but mine is called "Back to STAX - Memphis Soul".
Yeah it says it was recorded in Cannes, with all the same people you mentioned above :P

Yeah, must be the same. Check out Phil Upchurch playing "Love and Happienes" with Booker T. and the MG's. I love this song. He also released an version with vocals by the original artist Arthur Alexander on his album "What ever happened to the blues". I love this record. It features the Staple Singers, Maceo Parker, Pee Wee Ellis, Fred Wesley, Oscar Brown Jr., Les McCann and Prince's New Power Generation (plus many more).

Is that the same "Love and Happiness" that Al Green does on "Soul Comes Home"?

Oh sorry. My mistake. I was talking about a song called "Love and Peace".
But "Love and Happiness" is a great one too. I like the way Etta James did it in her Al Green-Medley and Al Green's singel-version is one of my alltime favorit soulsongs.
