hello to all you guys busy keeping the faith alive, i am a new member (just joined today). was in a conversation in the pub last night about the demise of vhs tapes and it got me thinking about the night my father arr ived home from work with a space age contraption called a video recorder under his arm. as a 12 year old kid in belfast at that time i was fascinated and watched him to proceed to set it up and produce a copy of a movie called "the blues brothers".the family gathered around and we started to watch. my mother left when the first swear word was uttered, muttering something about "filthy language" and "burning in hell", sister stigmata was a pussy cat in comparison!! my father gave up after the second musical number, he thought it was going to be a smokey and the bandit type movie, my younger sistetrs left half way through when they realised john travolta wasnt going to make an appearance. soon i was alone and never happier... belfast was a pretty gnarly place then (riots, prison protests, bombs etc.) and i totally lost myself in the world of jake and elwood. before the blues brothers i thought america was populated by people like the waltons and dukes of hazard. you have no idea how liberating it was to realise that there were people like me, less than perfect, willing to bend the rules, trying to have fun but with their hearts in the right place. I re-wound the tape and watched it again and would have went back for a third helping if i hadnt been sent to bed for saying "sh*t" in front of my mother for the first time in my life. here i am 25 years and approx 70 viewings later still smiling at the thought of someone eating 4 fried chickens and shrimp cocktail on the sameday.
best characters in the movie (apart from the obvious) have to be the good old boys followed a close second by john candys' parole officer (r.i.p.). 'b' movie box car blues has to be some of the best r&b ever committed to vinyl, played by a bunch of the tightest musicians i have ever heard, (jake and elwood arent too too shabby either  )
this is a fantastic site with great downloads and i look forward to future visits. have some good blues brothers related anecdotes stretching from saudi arabia to dublin to ulan bator in mongolia(i got around a bit in my youth)
gotta go to work!!!!
