Well its about time I set up an account here :)

First of all, Elwood DIDN'T sell the Bluesmobile for a microphone. He just traded the car, (then Jake asks "You traded the Bluesmobile for this?"), then Elwood says "No, for a microphone".

The microphone I'm assuming he traded for the new Bluesmobile was just a regular audio microphone for singing. Thats why Jake says "okay, I can see that...", as well as Elwood adding later, "They were practically giving them away." So all he got the Bluesmobile "for a a bargin", as Elwood also says. Hope that helps.

elwod traded the original bluesmobile for the microphone " wheres the caddy the caddy we used to have the blues mobile " it was not shone in the movie but i guess in the blues brothers private book and also in the thread some one started on the topic of "WHERS THE CADDY " look for it more info on it in there .

as for the car he has now " i picked it up last winter "", it was a bargin and they were practilly giving them away " pertaine to how much he paid for the new blues mobile at the mount prospect police auction .

so what happened to the mic ? dont know .

sorry to correct but if you listen to the whole conversaton between jake and elwood it explains every thing .

He said I picked it up at the mount prospect city police auction last Spring. not Winter.

there is a flyer of the auction on www.bluesmobile.net
it shows exactly where Elwood got the car

Well, he says he traded the Caddy for a microphone, so I just guess that it was for his new harmonica mic! See, Elwood didn't have the mic in his concert days in '78, but in the movie, he does, so I just kinda guessed that.

Anyone with me and agree? Disagree?

The vocal microphone generally used for this type of music would be a Shure Elvis type microphone, which was also used by Johnny Rotten (for nostalgic purpose, no doubt). The classic microphone used by blues harmonica players would be a green bullet microphone, which you can still buy. Both of these items can be found at guitarcenter.com or musiciansfriend.com for pretty cheap. There are some great microphones out there now, much cheaper than previously due mostly to advances in technology and overseas manufacture. David.

Bumping an old topic, but this was never properly resolved.

Elwood traded the Cadillac for an old EV 666 P.A. microphone. He uses this microphone to talk through the air raid siren, though this tidbit of info didn't survive the script editing process. The wiring of the microphone to the air raid siren was done by Duck Dunn, who at one time worked as an installation engineer for a company called Radex Alarm Systems. In the earlier versions of the script, Duck worked there while Jake was in prison and wasn't part of the Magictones. In a later version, many band members were added to the Magictones to reduce the amount of screen time devoted to putting the band back together. He may have still worked for Radex as his day job, assuming the Magictones only played at night in the Armada Room. It's also possible that he worked for Radex before joining the Band, though on his company ID card he has a beard and afro like in the movie, but years before that he was clean-shaven.

Wow...thanks for the details, Scott!

But even without knowing that, whenever people laugh about the Bluesmobile being traded for a mic, I like to point out that microphones can be prohibitively expensive...

Scott, are you sure about the microphone model? To me, the model used in the movie looks like a Shure 520B ("Green Bullet") or at least one of the ancestors of it, which were originally used in New York Cabs in the 50s (as legend is told).

I just googled for a picture of a EV 666, and it looks nothing like the microhpone used in the movie. Look here:

http://www.coutant.org/666r/index.html

What makes me wonder a little bit: I always thought, that that type of microphone was really hard to get at these times, because Shure would have discontinued them some years before, and continued them a few years after the movie. That would be the reason Elwood traded a Cadillac for one of those.

Now i just read on the Shure Website the history of the "Green Bullet" Microphones, and they write as follows:

Shure Website said:

1949 - Model 520 introduced. High impedance (>10,000 ohms). Employed R5 element.

1953 - Model 520B introduced. Low impedance (150 to 250 ohms).

1974 - Model 520B discontinued.

1980 - Model 520 discontinued.

1980 - Model 520D introduced. High/low impedance. Employed R44 element.

1997 - Model 520D discontinued.

1997 - Model 520DX introduced. High/low impedance. New dynamic element designed to sound like the original R5 element. 5/8"-27 internal threaded hole replaced by volume control.

So there was always one of the models available. Now with this new piece of information, I don't understand the necessity of trading a Cadillac for one of these mics...

The microphone model comes from the novel, so that's no guarantee it carried over to the movie. IIRC, the mic Elwood used in the car did look more like a Green Bullet than the EV 666 in that picture.

That raises some questions in my mind. Does this mean he traded for his Green Bullet and not the EV 666? Did he trade for the EV 666, but didn't use it? Would he even have a use for an EV 666? Seems a little awkward to use with a harmonica.

Maybe, Dan Aykroyd used the EV666 for the Live Concerts of the Blues Brothers Band, and not in the movie? Could be, as I recall in one of the concert bootleegs (that with the really annoying feedback of the harp microphone), that the mic used by Dan is definitely NOT a Green Bullet, but looks a lot like the EV666.

Anybody got the e-mail-address of Dan Aykroyd? So we could ask him personally. If there's anyone on this planet who could answer these questions, it's him.

In the novel he hooks the microphone up to the air raid siren bell before they remove it to put on the Bluesmobile, and hands the mic to Jake to sing through... I got the impression this was a vocals mic and not the mic Elwood himself uses for his harp (which I also agree is a Green Bullet, I had one just like it back in the 80s and have the newer model of it now).
