Great list!

Were the Blues Bros. Band really responsible for those songs on the Red, White, and Blues albums?

Here are the answers to the ?? you have:

"The Old Landmark" is actually titled: 'Old Landmark'. It was originally sung by The Staple Singers on their 1961 album, Swing Low Sweet Chariot. The song was produced by Roebuck "Pops" Staples.

"Can't Play The Blues" is actually titled: 'You Can't Play The Blues (In An Air-Conditioned Room) [AS IT IS LISTED ON THE BLUES BROTHERS 1992 ALBUM]. It was originally sung by Mel McDaniel on his 1989 album, Rock-a-billy Boy. The song was produced by R. Fagan and G. Kennedy.

"The Chicken And The Hawk" is actually titled: 'Chicken And The Hawk'. It was originally sung by Big Joe Turner on his 1951 release, Big Joe Turner's Greatest Hits. The song was produced by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller.

"Hot Weather" is actually titled: 'Hot Weather Blues'. It was originally sung by Jim Belushi on his 1997 release, 36-22-36. The song was produced by Robert Dade, William Ford and W. Thurman.

"You Don't Love Me" was originally sung by T-Bone Walker and Peter Chatman on their 1929 release, This Life I'm Living. The song was produced by T-Bone Walker himself.

Excusez Moi Mon Cherie [without the 'e' on the end] was originally sung and produced by the Lamont Cranston Band on their 1977 album, Specials Lit.

"Soup" is an original Blues Brothers song written and produced by themselves.

"Spooky" [the one The Blues Brothers cover] was originally sung by Classics IV on their 1968 album of the same name. The song was produced by Harry Middlebrooks, Jr. and Mike Shapiro.

If you have any more questions, please do not hesitate to ask. Thanks.

Wow Monty,
great job!!! Sounds like some great albums (not just because of the BB-stuff). I think I got this T-Bone Walker album you mentioned.
One can get the feeling you were with them when they picked out the tunes. Well, but now I got to go and ask my privat recorddealer if he got the albums you told us.
By the way is their a recording of "Soup" by the Blues Brothers??
And did we forget some songs that they did??

Okay, after a long time I now updated the list of the originals. I changed some artists, added some new and also updated the songs of Jim Belushi's new CD "According to Jim".
Hope the list is a help for all you BB-freaks
If you find some mistakes or find a missing song please tell me.

The Old Landmark (The Stapel Singers) # and
Sweet Home Chicago (Robert Johnson)

Those two artist may be the original but I think that the arrangement of 'Sweet home Chicago' that the Blues Brothers base their version on is closer to Magic Sam's. It's on the 'West Side Soul' album. Aretha Franklin does a smoking version of Old Landmark in the 60's that sounds a lot like the Blues Brothers version too, check it out. :D

Thank you Rizzolo_for_8,
I know Aretha's version. You're right it's very close to the Blues Brothers-Version. I got to check out the version Magic Slim did.
The Blues Brothers version of everybody needs somebody is also much closer to the coverversion Wilson Pickett did than Solomon Burks original.

Increased the limit from 10,000 to 15,000 characters.
Should be plenty

And this thread has been extremely useful while I've been working on the new site. When you click on a song like here:
http://www.bluesbrotherscentral.com/music.php
It will show not only the composer, lyrics and albums, but also:
-Original Artist
-Link to buy Original Song from Amazon USA, CA, UK, DE (could be on original album, or a compilation)
-Harp tabs (if available)
-Gigs this song was played at (for gigs that have a setlist available)
-Downloads for this song (for example we have several downloads on the site for 'Soul Man')

Later on I may also show other related albums this song appears on, because I'd like to also include Sacred Hearts, Have Love Will Travel Revue, and even go as far as James Brown, Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, Booker T and the MGs, Blood Sweat & Tears, BB King, Eric Clapton. Basically anything that may be of interest to fans.

Hello bbcentral,

maybe you could put some alternative Artists to the list, too? E.g. I have a record of Bill Haley and his Comets playing "Flip, Flop & Fly" and also a recording of "Shake your Tailfeather" by James and Bobby Purify (never heard of 'em before...)

Thanks in Advance,

George :BB:

The earliest version of "The Old Landmark" (yes "The" is included) is by The Famous Ward Singers - recorded in New York City on 15 Nov 1951.

Clara Ward (solo vocal, piano), Gertrude Ward, Willa Ward-Moultrie, Henrietta Waddy, Marion Williams.

Written by William Herbert Brewster.
