Ok, here's the problem. I own the Blue Brothers the Definitive Collection CD. Last night as it was playing, my husband insisted that it wasn't really Dan Akryod and John Belushi singing as the Blue Brothers. He said it was a "knock-off" group because their actual names were not listed as vocals. The CD jacket only states that all vocals were performed by Joliet Jake Blues and Elwood Blues except where indicated, meaning that it could have been anyone. Now, anyone who has this CD KNOWS that it is John Belushi and Dan Akryod singing (who could really imitate Belushi's voice?). However, I need to prove to him that this is indeed who is singing on this particular CD. I know it might be difficult since it is a compilation CD but I need a way to prove to him that it is actually Belushi and Akryod singing. Can anyone help? Do I need to write to the studio? I might add that normally I would like this just pass kowing I was right and he was wrong but this time there is a significant amount of money involved (he bet me it wasn't them). Help me!!
Thanks, Patblues (long live the Blues!) |

The songs on the Definitive Collection album are indeed sung by John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd. It is a compilation album that contains songs from the first 3 Blues Brothers cds: Briefcase Full of Blues, The Original Movie Soundtrack, and Made in America.
Hope this helps some |

Well, it's Dan and John.
On their first 4 records (Briefcase full of blues) (Made in America) (Soundtrack) (Best of...) on which the "Complete" CD-set is based also just say: Vocals: Joliet Jake and Elwood Blues. Only on the Soundtrack album you'll find a little add saying: Special thanks to John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd. You see it's a theatrical thing - they wanted the people to belive that Jake and Elwood are real persons. Even on the "Live in Chicago" album from 1996 you'll won't find the names Aykroyd and Belushi. Only an the Soundtrack to BB2000 they jused the real names - I think for comercial reasons. So, you're right your husband is wrong. |

Thanks for the replies.....can I get some more people to answer? I think the more people who confirm this for me the better I will be able to convince him.
I know it was a theatrical thing about not having their real names out there on the albums...... I'm not so sure he does though. Come on people, make me a happy (and relativelye rich) person!! Though I will not post the actual amount, this was no small bet. |

Consider yourself a wee bit richer. It is infact, Mr. Aykroyd and Mr. Belushi on that CD. I own the same one and treasure it dearly!

I also own it. It's 100% Belushi & Aykroyd!!
One of the greatest things I love about The Blues Brothers is the fact that they took the act VERY seriously! I LOVE how they called themselves Jake and Elwood on the CDs! It's gotten to the point when I watch The Best of the Blues Brothers, or the movie, or listen to anything by them, or see pictures, I immediatley think Joliet Jake & Elwood, not John and Dan. But when I see John and Dan, I think John and Dan, not Jake or Elwood. They played the parts very convincing. It's awesome! |

Thank you one and all. This should convince him. And if not, well....I guess then I'll just have go get all the other albums (what the hey, I could use them!) and point out the songs to him.
Damn, I miss John! Long live the blues! |

I bought my copy of this at a mall in Germany while I was there, and ahd to have it because i was so homesick. The tour bus driver played it for us on the way from Germany back to wherever the heck we were staying.
The bus driver liked it, the tour guide thought it was noisy music, but I explained, "That's the blues, baby." Yes, definitely and 100% Jake and Elwood..er, John and Danny!

The best way that I could think of for your to convince your husband is to just pop the Best of the Blues Brothers VHS or DVD in and SHOW him that it is John and Dan. Other than that, I dunno. It's pretty convincing, or at least I think so. You could also check the Church of Dan Aykroyd site, and pull up the Rolling Stones article about them. That's also pretty convincing.
Something a little related to not thinking that John and Dan are Jake and Elwood, you know what makes me really mad? These Blues Brothers bashers out there, you know who they are. The Blues fans that say "Oh, John and Dan are just cashing in on these great songs and artists." and the like, and say the BB's are not REAL musicians. Yea... right. These people don't know that the BB band is filled with big blues and R&B players, and that many people thank the BB's for jumpstarting their music again, and sending a new generation of fans to the old Blues and R&B music. Also, if these artists thought that Jake and Elwood were cashing in on their music, why would they be in their movies and guest with them? Do you guys know what I'm saying? Does anyone else know about these Blues Brothers bashers? Let me know!! -Josh |

PatBlues,
tell your husband he has a lot of home work to do if he doesnt think that it is infact Belushi and Aykroyd singing and playing. John Belushi was not only an actor but also a great musician. He sang on many songs (not only blues brothers stuff) He also knew how to play the guitar, and as I understand he also played drums in his earley life. Very talented man. You can hear John singing "Money(thats what I want)" and "Louie louie" on the Animal House Soundtrack. However on this album it states "Vocals by John Belushi" as for Dan Aykroyd, He is also a very talented man. He has one of the most unique harmonica sounds in the world! aside from being a great actor he is also a very educated blues/r&b musician. In the days with Jake, Aykroyd didnt sing much. He took the lead on maybe 2 songs. But he did play harp on everything. Now days, without belushi alive Aykroyd is singing a lot more. Tell your husband to go to a Blues Brothers Concert and he can see and hear for himself. Actually you can show him many concerts that were recorded either on video or audio. one which is available on this site is a 1980 concert in LA. I really think you should download this concert and let your husband take a listen. and if he still doesnt belive, Im sure all of us would like to hear a rebuttle from him.

I hve always think, that Elwood and Jake are like Dan and John "alteregos". When i listen Blues Brothers, i think "Elwood and Jake is singing". Sometimes it is hard to remember that they are not real person, but i dont´t think it is a bad thing (everybody who have seen or have red a good book or movie, know what i´m talkin about). Come on, it is for enjoy!

Wow! You are so lucky you own a definitive collection of the Blues brothers! There used to be an album of the blues brothers here in Manila but now its out of stock. Its awful because I wasn't even able to get a copy! Anyway, Its Dan and John's voices in that album because I read yesterday in Rolling Stone music encyclopedia that John and Dan were always addressed as Jake and Elwood when they are blues brothers. So, don't expectto see any John Belushi or Dan Aykroyd name on a Blues Brothers album.

Heck, the Definitive Collection is the only one still in stores here. I can't find any of the other ones. I came across Briefcase awhile ago, and I bought it. But I haven't been able to find any other ones.

I was lucky, they had a 3-for-the-price-of-1 pack at the CD shop. It was Briefcase, Original Soundtrack and Made in America, for the same price as a regular CD
It's a shame Blues Brothers:Complete has all the tracks mixed up. They could have just put all 3 CDs onto 2 discs in order, and split the soundtrack across both CDs (the other albums have no spaces between tracks).
