ever wonder how the hell they filmed that shot???
as i was just looking at the pic with the bridge up and wondering they probubly had to drive the car all the way up to the edge of the bridge while in its upright position, stop the car when they reached the edge and roll back down in reverse. Am I wrong? Because we do see the car flying up the bridge pretty fast. How'd they do it?

I think it was said on one of the DVD special features that they istalled special roll-on and roll-off ramps for a wider angle so the car could accelerate before entering the already opened bridge. Without these ramps it would have been similar to driving into a wall / the floor at the other side. They also had to do the jump more than one time as far as I heard. If I only remebered where I saw that... Gotta go through the special features again. If you look at the car in the final scene after Elwood accelerates you can see the driver slammed onto the brakes just soon enough so he wouldnt crash into the wall in front of him. This is noticeable only for a few frames before the next cut. Then they must have had the car climbing the bridge at a much more grip-friendly angle. For the jump itself they needed speed thus the ramps (not visible of course). |

Fantastic photos!
Can you see those people standing on the edge of the bridge while it's raised? You wouldn't catch me doing that in a million years! And the photos of the Bluesmobile being towed by the camera truck are great, I love seeing that stuff

If you want to see a photo of an action shot or two on the filming go to theybrokemywatch.com You can see the ramp in front of the bridge.
I love seeing the updated shots from Chicago. I got a bunch from my visits but these are wonderful and more detailed. |

i watched this again , and some thing has allways bugged me , when they are sitting waiting for the bridge , you see the kingfisher from jakes pov looking at elwood with it through elwoods window .
now for that to be seen , the car would have to be facing the other direction , west , not east , as the bridge is behind them , if they were facing east, as we are to belive it would be on jakes side , and elwoods view, would be of the shipyard salt depot that is on the north side of 95th street. |

The building in the background is (was) on the North side of the street and West of the Calumet River. It was torn down years ago. |

I have always been curious about the Kingfish building as well.
I've felt that the building with the red roof ("Calumet Fisheries Inc."), and the "Kingfish" seen outside Elwood's window, is not the same thing. Well, after much research (watching the film frame by frame and several hours on the online 3D maps) I am 99% sure... and if anyone knows otherwise (Rizzolo?), please correct me.. that the photos below, show where the Kingfish once stood. The main points (I believe) that show the red roof building, and the old Kingfish, are not the same place... In the film... The Kingfish is a much larger building, it has 2 stories, not including the roof line. (the red roof building is much smaller) It is set down an embankment, from street level. (the red roof is at street level) No silo's in background. No expressway/ Skyway in background. The car (as mentioned) would need to be facing the wrong way. While studying this area, I collected a ton of photos to support this, but I believe these three show it the best. I believe the Kingfish once stood in the rectangle cut out area, shown in the upper left of this photo. The red roof building is located in the lower right. The other two...
The first photo is from the same area, compared to a screen cap. Many of the same elements exist, including the three poles (that now surround the blue tank). With the far right pole now cut/ broken (?) .. the embankment, the end of the guard rail, and even the fire hydrant. Also, if you look at the very center, of the lower photo, you will see a lighter area of concrete. Overhead photos of the area show that this spot is in fact two perfect squares. I'm guessing they are footprints of where the buildings (seen in the film, behind the Kingfish) once stood. * The last photo shows what I believe is in fact the smaller red roof building, actually seen on screen. A screen cap w/ a current photo, (both shot from just about where the old Kingfish would have been) Last edited by TK826; 23rd Dec 2008 at 11:16 AM. Reason: added info |

Wow, tk!! That's some fantastic work. I think what you've done here is put to rest any doubt of this scene being a possible blooper, regarding which direction the car was facing.
In the first pic, where you can see the rectangle cut-out of where the Kingfish must have once stood, you can picture the Bluesmobile on the street there. Getting ready to launch the rear tires into a fit of smoking rubber headed towards the bridge. Excellent stuff, man! |
