AndrewBlues 7th Aug 2005, 01:36 PM I wonder what key is harmonica musing,cheaper to keap her an turn on your lovelight? (elwood and buster's-john popper-) Harp keys that I wonder...?!? riders in D right?
I can help you out a bit. Riders is in A minor (C Major). According to Madmatt's method, that would make the harp key in D minor (F Major). Cheaper to Keep Her is in B flat Major (I guess MM's harp key would be E flat). I don't have the other two songs. By the way, Madmatt, you said that Soul Man is in F. Doesn't it start out in E and then change to F after the bridge ("Be your only boyfriend yeah yeah yeah yeah")?
madmatt 7th Aug 2005, 06:29 PM Its cross harmonica player thought me it is what you use when playing you go up 4 keys from the key of the song so
A=D
Bb=E
C=F
D=G
E=A
F=Bb
G=C
The first is key is the song second is the harp I knew about the Soul Man thing but it doesn’t matter only the harp solo
AndrewBlues 12th Aug 2005, 09:49 AM Oh, you're playing cross harp. Cross is fun (and when playing in minor it's almost required). However, in Bb the cross would be Eb. I have a small tip for you, If it doesn't help you than don't use it, but instead of thinking 4 feys think 5 half steps. Also, I didn't know you just meant the solos, I thought you meant the whole songs. My bad. In that case, the solo in Riders is in Bb minor (Db major). You do have talent, MM. Keep at it. You're pro for your age.
madmatt 12th Aug 2005, 10:59 AM thanks I try
Airman 15th Aug 2005, 01:45 AM Hi guys,
I'm new here. Just joined yesterday and what a site this is!!
Anyway, I bought myself a harp a little while back and need some advice on the best learning method. I play guitar, so I'm not totally green on music. Any recommended books, videos, ets?
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks
Brian

misonek 18th Feb 2006, 03:39 AM Hmm.. If it is for example Jailhouse Rock G (harp) = D(song) I need a harp in G? Can somebody explain to me? :) thanks
FatJim 19th Feb 2006, 03:45 PM Riders is in A minor (C Major). According to Madmatt's method, that would make the harp key in D minor (F Major)
To play tunes in minor keys it is best to play in 3rd position, not cross harp. To play in 3rd (slant harp) you use a harmonica tuned a step below the key the band is in. So an A minor piece would use a G major harp. Don't try using the same cross harp licks though. 3rd places more emphasis on the middle and upper register of the harp and uses more blow notes.
For the musos amongst you, 3rd position means you are playing with a Dorian scale (4 draw to 8 draw).
You can also get the Lee Oskar minor tuned harps. They are fun and make you think about your playing.
3rd Position is also good for blues on the chromatic harmonica - check out George Smith.

The reason you play in G is because it sounds more bluesey. It is called 2nd position or "cross harp".
Think of a C major scale:-
C maj - C D E F G A B C
now look at the G major scale:-
G maj - G A B C D E F# G
With the exception of 1 note, the scales are the same. If we play a G song on a C harp, we have the notes of a G scale, but with a flattened 7th - mixolydian mode.
It's the same with any pair of major scales with 5 half steps between them. i.e. a D song on a G harp.
That's the theory, but WHY?
...Well the reason is mainly down to the fact that playing in 2nd means your root note is a draw note and drawing on holes 1,2 and 3 gives you the major chord based on that root. In fact when playing in 2nd position you will use more draw notes than blow. Draw notes are easier to bend and you'll want the bluesey flattened third and fifth too (as well as the flattened seventh that you've already got)
In all there are 12 possible positions for harp - although a lot are really unuseable because they require bends to get the root note. First, second and third are the most common. First position is the Dylan style straight harp sound, second is best for major scale blues, third for minor blues.

Bb=E

As a pro Arranger and musician, I have to correct one Error in this:
NOT Bb=E, but B=E (without the flat).
Greetings from Germany,
George :)
